SIOUX FALLS, SD — The founder of Agriprocessors Inc. says he spent every penny he could get to keep a kosher meatpacking plant in Iowa open after an immigration raid last year.
Abraham Rubashkin testified Tuesday during his son’s federal financial fraud trial in U.S. District Court in Sioux Falls, S.D.
His son, Sholom Rubashkin, is charged in a 91-count indictment.
His father testified that he mortgaged his home, two buildings he owned and his store in Brooklyn, N.Y., to keep the Postville, Iowa, plant open. The efforts failed as the plant fell into bankruptcy in November 2008.
Abraham Rubashkin testified that he gathered as much as $5 million in personal assets after the raid. He says he was unaware of any illegal immigrants at the plant.
Curious
Can someone explain to me why the judge is permitted to send out the jury when certain defense witnesses are testifying? Why is it o.k. for the jury not to hear everything that is presented?
answer
the judge may feel that the testimony may lean the jury in one direction.
