Brooklyn, NY [CHI] — Hypnosis – that word evokes mystery and a fear of the unknown. That might all changed with Dr. Mordechai (Mutty) Weinberger, the first frum hypnotist, a prominent therapist who has revealed that one can learn the Nifloas HaBoireh in understanding the brain’s functions. Even more, if we learn how to understand the inner workings of the brain, we can be empowered to change our lives by taking control and building better and stronger relationships.

Last June, at a concert sponsored by B’Derech, the movement founded by attorney Ruchie Freier, to keep teenagers happy B’Derech HaTorah, Dr. Weinberger, performed a live-stage hypnosis act. The crowd was in awe and impressed by his ability to make people do things they would never do in public. His message to the crowd was “You can all be empowered to change your lives for the better. While the past is always a part of you and lies deep within your brain; with the right tools, you can learn to manipulate your brain to make you a happier person.”

The Rebbe was not for it apparently.
Although i think there was one letter where the Rebbe did allow it for one individual.

The Rebbe was definitely against hypnosis, for the reason that it strips the individual of free will.

  • OT Rebbe

I Think that this guy did some of his training for his degree in OT about five years ago.

“does anybody know a source where the Rebbe speaks against hypnosis?”

There is a letter printed in the book “mind over matter,” where the Rebbe comes out against it for the reasons that SB writes.

Interesting. I never heard before that the Rebbe was against hypnosis, so thanks for clarifying that in the comment. But in any case, is there some correlation between the 3 levels of the brain he describes and machshava, dibur, maaseh? or maybe more appropo would be the concept of osios hamachshava?

  • A Reader of the Rebbe-s Letters

I always find it difficult to understand the Rebbe’s words. There always seems to be confusion. Was the Rebbe for hypnosis, against it, or does anyone know the truth?

I have seen it written in a letter Adar 5738, which can be found here: http://www.lchaimweekly.org… that it seems from his words that he was not in favour of it.

If my English is not good, please forgive me.

See the heading “The Rebbe Writes” (last few paragraphs)and maybe someone can confirm if the Rebbe actually meant he was against it, or whether this is just a bad translation.

Others seem to know what he was in favour of without even reading his letters.

I saw an Igeres Kodesh where the Rebbe recommends hypnosis for a child who stuttered. Don’t have the mare’h mokom off hand. It may be a case to case issue, as with many things- for some it was the tzinor for the brocho.
