Video of the Day – Jewish Life in Yemen

  • Interesting but....

What is CNN’s purpose? To have all the Jews their displaced? G-d forbid!

  • Fascinating

Very very interesting. Are the Jews there truly Torah observant–it seems like they are from their peyos and studies…and yet, it must be hard when you’re trying to blend in with your neighbors! And how to preserve all the details of halacha without much contact without the outside world?
Also, the style of the women’s dress: is it because they feel more comfortable being like their neighbors, or is it more of a safety issue?

This is all very fascinating, and I wish them much safety, and hopefully smooth relocation to EY soon!

Too bad this video didn’t focus very much on why 99.9 percent of Yemen’s Jews no longer live there. I hope that these families all end up in Eretz Yisrael soon.

  • Good for them...

The women dress like that because it is the Yemenite law. According to the law every part of your body must be covered except for your eyes. So no, they are not dressing like that because they are comfortable being like the muslims – it’s just that they’d rather not get in trouble with the law.

Jews in Yemen, like everywhere else, are influenced by their surrounding societies.

Dressing modestly as they do, is the norm in Yemen, it dosnt stand out amongst the arabs.

Jewish men and women are indistinguishable from their Arab neighbors. except that men have Peyot, known in Yemen as “Simonim” (meaning, Marks/indicators) b/c that is ultimately what marks a Jew from a non-Jew.

  • Interesting but....

I thought they wanted to go back to their homes(the ones who were displaced). It sounds as if they don’t want to go to EY. Am I the only one that caught that?

It is not wise to say everything on camera. May G-d protect and strengthen them. May He answer the prayers of their heart and not the words of their mouths. Theirs is a precarious existence
