Annual Chanukah Telethon to Rebuild Shul in Mineola

Shortly after the rains swept over L.I. last July and flooded Chabad of Mineola and the headquarters of the NCFJE on Long Island, Rabbi Anchelle Perl, began to turn a disaster into triumph.

Instead of being discouraged by the ill fate of his shul, Rabbi Perl embarked on his most ambitious community program to date. He is rebuilding the synagogue and creating the first worldwide Chabad Arts Center scheduled to open next spring.

These expansive goals are the focus of this year’s 15th annual Chabad Telethon, to air this Sunday Dec 9th 7pm-11pm with simultaneous live webcast at: ChanukahTelethon.com.

Rabbi Perl needs $500,000 to help restore and complete the building that will also serve as a multi-use Jewish education arts center, reaching out to a broad spectrum of people who are interested in knowing more about Jewish life, its teachings and traditions.

Through film, drama, dance, music, photography, fine arts, town hall debates, food demonstrations and more, Chabad of Mineola will offer a smorgasbord of workshops, classes and performances that will be spiritually uplifting and inspire creativity while empowering people through entertainment. Rabbi Perl’s vision is to have people of all ages congregate in the center where warmth and friendship will prevail.

“Learn, live and laugh,” says Rabbi Perl. “Jewish life is more than the synagogue.” He believes in thinking “out of the box”. โ€œThe Lubavitcher Rebbe teaches us how we can turn a tragedy into a triumph.โ€

Jackie Mason, Neil Sedaka and other celebrities will make guest appearances on videotape. Entertainers include Lipa Schmeltzer, Neshoma Orchestras and the Chassidic Dancing Rabbis led by Leibel Cohen. Viewers will see video footage of the water devastation and the moving burial of the damaged Torah scroll.

In a more light hearted vein, Rabbi Perl is featured rising to the occasion in a helicopter flight he took from Farmingdale, LI to Manhattan with three raffle winners.

“The flood can be viewed as a blessing in disguise,” says Rabbi Perl. For more information on the Chanukah Telethon, visit ChanukahTelethon.com.

    Dear Rabbi Perl,
I am not surprised to see that you have a video on YouTube. You always were very technologically astute. Good luck tonite with our telethon. I was searching the web to find out about it and I saw your video. I will contribute what I can to support the efforts to rebuild your shul. I will never forget how you helped my family during our time of need when my son Craig was blessed to have his Bar Mitzvah in your temple. The ceremony was very moving and we will never forget that day. Craig is now 22 years old and will graduate from New Paltz with a history education degree. G-d bless you, Rabbi and thank you once again.

    Dear Rabbi Perl,
I hope that you raise the funds necessary to rebuild your shul. If you get in touch with the Annenburg (Annenberg) foundation perhaps Annenberg will help you. He contributes to non Jews. Why shouldn’t he help his own? I believe that charity shoiuld begin at home. I help whenever I can and I do give to Chabad Labavich with a happy and opened heart. Thank you for all that you do.
