MUNSTER, IN — With the Jewish High Holidays approaching, Rabbi Eliezer Zalmanov of Chabad of Northwest Indiana is embracing new technology to promote holiday services: YouTube.

Zalmanov has used the online video sharing site in the past to promote an event, when he appeared dressed as a cowboy in a video clip inviting the Jewish community to “Purim in Wild West” last March.

The late leader of the Chabad movement — the “Rebbe” — Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, had long been a proponent of using modern technology. He was one of the first to have his lectures broadcast nationally on cable television in the early 1980s, according to a news release.

“If it’s technologically available,” said Zalmanov. “That itself is proof that it can have a spiritual use.”

Chabad’s services are offered at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster as the regular facilities cannot accommodate the larger number of attendees on Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated this year from Sept. 12 to 14, and Yom Kippur on Sept. 21 and 22.
