100 Mezuzah Affixed to Homes in Ulyanovsk
Ulyanovsk, Russia – The Jewish community of Ulyanovsk has received good news regarding sponsorship of this year’s “Mezuzah for Every Jewish Home”, introduced some time ago by Chief Rabbi of Ulyanovsk Yossi Marozov.
Every Jewish home received a brochure explaining the mitzvah of mezuzah with an invitation to make an appointment for the Rabbi to personally visit their home and install their first mezuzah free-of-charge. The response was overwhelming, the Jewish Community Center soon receiving dozens of calls from interested persons. Currently, over 100 doorposts proudly display a beautiful mezuzah, and there is a long waiting list!!
For nearly 80 years, Ulyanovsk did not have a resident Rabbi. Just ten months ago, Rabbi Yossi Marozov, a Chabad Lubavitch emissary, and his wife Suri arrived to serve the local Jewish community. They are working with lay leaders and community members to advance Jewish life. With its 735,000 residents, Ulyanovsk is now home to a blossoming Jewish community that is part of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
“It is clear that local Jews are interested in maintaining the traditions of their ancestors. Affixing a mezuzah at the entrance of their house is an important event, contributing to the sanctity of one’s home,” explained Igor Dabakarov, the elected President of the Jewish Community of Ulyanovsk.
In addition to that provided by other sponsors, the funding for this program, came from the Mezuzah Bank, run by the Shluchim Office in New York, and the Judaica Place on Avenue M in Flatbush.
