Chabad Couple’s ‘Start-Up Synagogue’ in Texas

In his adopted hometown of Frisco, Mendy Kessleman stands out with the look of one who might have just stepped off the stage of a production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

There aren’t many 26-year-old men wearing Yarmulkes and untrimmed beards around here, the South Africa-born rabbi conceded during a recent trip to a Starbucks coffee shop along Preston Road.

“I get some stares, but also a lot of questions,” he said.

Kessleman, and his wife, Mushkie, 22, moved from New York to Frisco with their son, Nosson, now about 17 months, in August 2014 for the opportunity to respond to those questions and provide answers, especially to Jews looking for ways to reconnect or connect more fully with their faith and traditions.
