Over 1500 Participate in Challah Baking Workshop

Friday mornings are a busy time at Chabad’s Krafts for Kids Workshop in Margate, NJ. Each Friday at 9:45am, long lines begin forming on the sidewalk of Ventnor Avenue as children and their families get ready to participate in one of the Jersey Shore’s well sough after traditions, baking challah with Chabad.

Chabad at the Shore, a Jewish Outreach organization, opened the Crafts Shop as a service to the community to allow children to express their creativity while learning about their Jewish Heritage.

Workshops are led by Tova Rapoport; she demonstrates how to mix the raw ingredients to create traditional challah dough, and then children get to roll and braid their own dough to create authentic looking and delicious tasting challah.

Along the way participants learn interesting facts about keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath and fascinating all-around tidbits on Judaism. For many, baking challah is their first introduction to traditional Judaism.

Over the years, the activity has become so popular that vacationers call months in advance to ensure a spot during the busy weekends of August. This past summer alone over 1,500 people participated in Chabad of the Shore’s Challah Baking activities.
