Shliach in Berlin Greets American President
Today Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, Shliach of the Rebbe in Berlin and Rabbi of the Jewish community attended the talk of President Obama at the Brndenburg gate, after talk he shortly greeted and thanked the president.
In the talk the President spoke about Colonel Gail Halvorsen who was is a command pilot in the United States Air Force And is known as the original Candy Bomber or the “Rosinenbomber” in Germany.
Shortly before landing at the Berlin airport, Halvorsen would drop candy attached to parachutes to children below.
This action, which was sparked similar efforts by other crews, was the source of the popular name for the pilots: the candy bombers. Halvorsen had wanted to help raise the morale of the children during the time of uncertainty and privation.
Following the talk of Pres. Obama, Colonel Halverson and Rabbi Teichtal sat and chatted. Rabbi Teichtal asked him what he thinks coming back to Berlin today over 60 years later, he replied “I am not Jewish, however I am Thrilled to learn that Jewish life is developing so rapidly”.
Altough he is 92 he feels a young Spirit when he knows children are happy. “Knowing Jewish children are proud of their heritage in Berlin is a sweet candy for me today”
