Honey Bee Workshop Captivates Hundreds of Children in FL

FOLRIDA [CHI] — Chabad Youth Network of Florida introduced their newest and most exciting workshop, the honeybee workshop, which captivated and brought hundreds of children in schools throughout Florida face-to-face with the world of the honeybee.

Thousands of bees are brought in by Rabbi Shmuly G. in a safe and secure bee house where the children get to see and explore the fascinating world of the honeybee and how it produces its honey.

A real live honey extractor is on display for the children to actively take part in placing the honeycombs inside the machine and turn the special handle in order to produce the honey. The children were amazed and astounded when actual honey came pouring out of the spout!

They then learn, through an animated, and hands on fun discussion, the significance of the use of honey during Rosh Hashanah and the High Holiday season. They even learn why honey is kosher even though it comes from a non kosher insect. And of course they sing all the special Rosh Hashana songs.

A fish tank with live fish is on display as Rabbi G. explains the concept of Tashlich. The children also learn about some of the other traditional foods we eat during Rosh Hashanah and their significance. Like pomegranates, dates, head of a fish…

The workshop ends with an exciting honeybee activity. The children create an adorable honey dish in the shape of a bee or an apple and then fill up their dish with honey and a piece of honeycomb from the real beehive! Everybody is abuzz with excitement as they leave the workshop.

Special thanks to Rabbi Yonah Vilenkin of Tzivos Hashem of Canada for helping make this all happen.
