ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia [FJC] — More than 150 children have just finished spending a wonderful two weeks a the ‘Amichai’ camp, run by the Jewish community of Rostov-on-Don and sponsored by the Ohr Avner Foundation and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia. At a picturesque site on the bank of the Don River, participants came from multiple locations including Orenburg, Perm, Krasnodar, Volgograd, Kostroma, Kursk, Novorossiisk, Novocherkassk, Sochi, Svetliy Yar, and numerous other smaller cities.

This fourth season of the camp was particularly successful, with the direct involvement of young adults from the local community’s Youth Club, future pedagogues, and counselors visiting from Moscow. This enthusiastic team was led by Natelie Mindzhoraya, the head of the Youth Club run by the Jewish community of Rostov-on-Don.

The camp’s program, called the ‘Academy of Jewish Wonders’ was carefully put together by these future instructors over the course of several months. Apart from the many engaging activities typically offered at ‘Gan Israel’ camps, which take place in communities across Russia, Ukraine and elsewhere in the Former Soviet Union, the children were thrilled to discover a new daily ‘wonder’ related to their history, ethnic heritage, and faith ranging from the world’s creation, the family, Jerusalem, the Temple, numerous miracles, etc..

The Jewish community of Rostov-on-Don is a leading member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
