Picture of the Day: Newborn Boy Named After Toulouse Terror Victim

On the 22nd of March, 2012, about 72 hours after the tragic news of the brutal massacre of a father and three children in Toulouse, France shocked the world, a baby boy was born to Zalmy and Chaya Wolff (nee Inglis) of Crown Heights. This morning, the newborn was named after Aryeh, the 6-year-old son of Yonatan and Eva Sandler, who was murdered, along with his father and 3-year-old brother Gavriel, on his way to school that morning.

very touching. i am confused but is there a inyan not to name after someone who passed away young? or maybe you add a name extra?

it’s very honourable of them to do it
But don’t you suppose to change a name slightly if they are named after someone who died a violent death? That’s why we spell Akiva differently than Rabi Akiva in the gemoro.
perhaps they have added another name?
btw the younger brother gavriel הי”ד was named after Gabi Holtzberg הי”ד

  • 2-Question

@ #14 re: Question. They added “Chaim”. The name is “Chaim Aryeh”…

  • to #14

His name is Chaim Aryeh. Chaim was added, due to the fact that Aryeh obm was tragically killed…

  • adding a name

To #14. Adding another name when naming after a young niftar doesn’t apply when the niftar died ‘al kiddush Hashem’.

  • Adding a name

First of all Mazal Tov to Zalmy & Chaya may you raise him to grow up to be a source of Nachas to you and Klal Yisroel. very touching and very inspirational.

#21, you are mistaken, even by Kiddush Hashem you change the name somewhat, see comment #17 about R’ Akiva who was killed AK“H and he was 120 not exactly young, and still we change the spelling from alef to hey just to make a change (see shu”t chasam sofer even hoezer vol. 2,25).

So beautiful a thought!! His memory will shine brightly in this new beautiful baby boy. We pray that he grows with strength in all parts of his life, and brings the family and the Jewish people pride and nachas!
