Prepared, Not Scared: Bringing Practical Self-Defense to Our Community – Men, Women, Boys, and Girls
The need for practical self-defense and greater awareness in our community has become increasingly clear. That need is what led to the creation of Guardian Self Defense (GSD), a nonprofit organization dedicated to making practical Krav Maga training accessible to everyday members of the Jewish community.
The idea behind GSD is simple: you don’t have to be a fighter, an athlete, or have any previous experience to learn how to protect yourself. You just have to start training.
GSD connects community members with experienced Krav Maga instructors in a welcoming environment where students learn practical self-defense, situational awareness, confidence, and how to respond when it matters. Classes are designed for regular people, regardless of previous experience or fitness level.
It’s not about looking for trouble. It’s about being prepared if trouble finds you.
Now, We’re Starting Young
That same philosophy is now coming to the next generation with the launch of TKM Brooklyn, a new youth Krav Maga program in Crown Heights.
The goal isn’t simply to teach children how to fight. It’s to help them develop awareness, confidence, discipline, and practical self-defense skills from a young age.
TKM Brooklyn offers age-appropriate training for children and teens, taught by trained and certified instructors who are members of the local community. It’s an opportunity for Crown Heights families to give their children practical skills that can stay with them for life, right here in their own community.
Community Support
Run by local community members, these programs have received support from community leaders who recognize how important it is for local families to have access to practical self-defense training. Community activists including Rabbi Moshe Pinson of Beis Shmuel, Rabbi Sholom Goldstein of Beis Rivka, and Rabbi Mendy Hershkop of Shomrim have endorsed the initiative and its mission to make self-defense training accessible to both children and adults in our community.
It’s About Training
At the end of the day, the message behind both GSD and TKM Brooklyn is simple: preparedness comes from training.
You don’t need martial arts experience, a specific level of fitness, or to think of yourself as someone who would ever need self-defense. You simply need to start.
GSD and TKM Brooklyn are working to make that training accessible to the community, from adults to the next generation.

This is a great program! I train with the adults on Sundays, and my kids go to the kids program and love it! Highly recommended.
