Crown Heights Neighbors Gather for Third Annual Multicultural Iftar

On Thursday night, members of the Crown Heights community gathered for the third annual multicultural Iftar. Organized by Assembly Member Brian A. Cunningham and hosted by Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, of the Jewish Future Alliance, and Imam Rasheed Jaaber, the event was an opportunity for residents of diverse backgrounds to share food and conversation.

After arriving at Rabbi Behrman’s home, Muslim attendees gathered in a dedicated space for Maghrib prayer. With the sun set and prayers completed, attendees were treated to a catered, Glatt Kosher and Halal meal including shawarma, brisket, medjool dates and more.

“Crown Heights is a microcosm of the diversity that gives New York its strength and vitality,” said Assembly Member Brian A. Cunningham. “While we may pray differently, speak different languages, and practice different traditions, this meal is a reminder that we can be united in our common humanity. I want to express my gratitude to Rabbi Yaacov Behrman for opening his home to us, to Imam Rasheed Jaaber and all the other community leaders who have done so much to build understanding and friendship here in Central Brooklyn.”

The first Crown Heights Iftar in 2022 was the first community event organized by Assembly Member Cunningham’s office. Since then, the annual celebration has served as an opportunity to build bridges between the diverse communities of Central Brooklyn as the only Chassidic-Muslim Iftar in Brooklyn.

Rabbi Yaacov Behrman said, “In a world rife with uncertainty beyond our control, it is crucial that we, in Brooklyn, stand together in solidarity. We are all descendants of Abraham, so this unity holds profound significance, particularly in these dangerous times.”

“Ramadan is a time for both introspection and community reflection,” said Imam Rasheed Jaaber. When we gather with our friends and neighbors, we build deeper connections and understanding that will lead us to peace and prosperity. I am filled with joy and gratitude for the work of Assembly Member Cunningham, Rabbi Behrman, and everyone who joined us to help build bridges.”

“For the third straight year, the Crown Heights community exemplified the multicultural camaraderie that makes Brooklyn so great,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “I salute Assembly Member Brian Cunningham and Rabbi Yaacov Behrman for organizing another successful iftar. Bringing communities together at events like this help make Brooklyn a better borough for all, and I’m grateful that my office was able to join for this year’s festivities.”
