Crown Heights Helps Its Neighbors With Food Donation

by CrownHeights.info

Crown Heightsers help their neighbors. All of them.

When Yosef Hershkop, the manager of the Kāmin Health Crown Heights Urgent Care, heard that the senior citizen tenants of the William Reid Apartment complex on East New York Ave were short on face masks, and even more seriously short on food, he took action.

A hand delivered care package of surgical face masks and hand sanitizer was just the first step, as Crown Heights residents worked with local elected officials to provide for those in need.

Hershkop reached out to Rabbi Benji Stock, the director of of CSSY, a local organization that helps hundreds of families and Anthony J. Finkel of DPH.NYC. Rabbi Stock called his long time friend Sandy Richmond of Duso Foods in Ellenville, NY. Duso sent pallets of dry goods and drinks, along with snacks and other essentials were donated to help the seniors in isolation due to the COVID-19 virus.

He also reached out to Shlomie Klein of Mr Greens, a local produce shop, who donated and personally delivered produce with the Duso Foods delivery.

A team from State Senator Myire’s office and Representatives from Assemblywomen Richardson’s office worked to arrange the drop off of food packages for the residents of the complex.

“As this crisis continues to ravage our community, nothing is more important to us than providing direct aid to those in need,” said State Senator Myrie. “Fortunately, District 20 has no shortage of community members and organizations who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help their neighbors, and that’s exactly what they did.”

The delivery of the donated food took place in the parking lot of the William Reid Apartment complex on Monday afternoon. State Senator Myrie and a representative from the office of Assemblywomen Richardson joined Yosef Hershkop and the donors in bringing the food into the complex, where a system of separating the donated food into care packages was arranged.

A big thank you was extended to Menachem Wilmowsky of Mobile Rush Inc. for sponsoring protective masks for the seniors.
