Police Officer Teaches Campers About Bike Safety

A Police Officer from the 71st Precinct visited Camp Machane Heights yesterday, Tuesday, to talk about bicycle safety.

Camp Machane Heights is a biking camp for Crown Heights boys ages 11-14 from all schools – Oholei Torah, Lubavitch Yeshiva, Darchei, Boys on Shlichus, etc. – run by Rabbi P. Blasberg and based out of Lubavitcher Yeshiva-Crown Street.

Officer Schmidt spoke to the campers all about biking safety. “Conflict between pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists is commonplace in the busy world in which we live. It is up to all of us to do our part to minimize these conflicts and hopefully avoid any injuries,” the officer explained to the boys. He gave them information and insight into the rules of the road, as well as laws for bike riding in the City.

Officer Schmidt went over some key safety rules, including: hand signals, wearing a helmet, being aware of your surroundings, giving the right of way to pedestrians, mothers and children, keeping both hands on the handle bar, obeying traffic laws, red lights, etc.

  • Headline should read: A 71st precinct policeman not giving out tickets for a change.

As a resident of crown heights it’s about the first time I see a policeman not out mercilessly writing tickets (whether for true or false violations but it’s you’re word against the cop’s) and gaining revenue for the city ostensibly in the name of safety, and actually doing something positive for this community. It will take a long time for “New York’s Finest” to regain my respect.
