Op-Ed: When Less IS More

This government and indeed, this State, is all about more. More taxes. More spending. More debt. More unemployment. More crime. More corruption. More misery.

As long as Democrats are running the show, one thing is certain: we can continue to expect more: more of the same.

Here in Kings County, we have an unemployment rate per capita of 10.3% (the State average is 8.2%) – up from 5.7% in 2007. True, the State was also Democrat-run then, but since a Democratic-run Congress, Senate & Presidency were elected, the Assembly’s mandate became clearer and more open: move forward with turning this State into even more of a disaster than it has been till now.

Just look at the chaos we New Yorkers have had to put up with: an “Accidental Governor”, who was appointed hot on the heels of one of New York’s most sordid scandals in the past 5 decades, which brought down Governor Spitzer (now a TV “star”.) Governor Paterson has faced his own demons in the form of accusations of tampering in an on-going court case involving one of his staffers, as well as contentions that he accepted “pay-offs” from the Yankees (should that have been play-offs?)

Sheldon Silver, Assembly Leader, has long been accused of feathering the nest of his constituents, in far greater measure than other Assembly people, who at least attempt to be seen as being less partisan. But at least one can say he truly cares about the residents of his district.

Can we say the same for Kareem Camara? What exactly has he done for Crown Heights and in particular, the Jewish residents?

He shows up to someone’s Sukkah. Nice. A good photo op. He attends Dinners for prominent charitable organizations. Nice again.

Has he brought in new industry? Has he improved our transportation system (well, we do have bike lanes making vehicle traffic more difficult)? How are our schools? Are our streets cleaner? Better illuminated? What about crime? We have definitely seen more of the latter in recent months; in fact, yet another local resident was shot tonight in our neighborhood.

Just what has Mr. Camara done for us…except make nice to local community leaders? Are we safer? Economically better off? Are there less hungry & destitute families here? Are there fewer people on welfare?

Has Mr. Camara’s salary increased? Is he getting more? Are you?

It is time for a change. It’s time to bring back economic security to a neighborhood designated an inner-city poverty zone. It’s time to feel secure again, not just at night but during the day as well. It’s time for State government in Albany to work for the people, not for itself. It’s time to bring back ethics and honesty, to reduce the tax burden on working families, to find a permanent solution to the high spending-high debt carousel we find ourselves riding year after year.

I wonder why Republicans and ordinary people are the only ones who see the catastrophic mess we are living in. And it’s not getting any better. I can only surmise that a Democrat-run Assembly actually likes the status quo. Its members are doing very well, thank you very much. Unfortunately, the rest of us aren’t…except the local wannabees who count Community success based on the numbers of photo ops and home visits by our elected officials.

How’s it working for you? It’s not? Then on Tuesday, vote Mendy Raitport, Republican-Conservative candidate for Assemblyman in the 43rd District. Vote for Less: Less corruption. Less money disappearing out of your pockets. Less unemployment. Less debt. And in so doing, you will be voting for more: More honesty. More jobs. More safety. More down-to-earth common sense. More accountability. More in-touch with local citizens. More of the life you deserve, for you and your children.

I’m still waiting to hear what Raitport has to offer. It seems that he expects to be voted in based on his religion. Seems pretty discriminatory to me. “Vote for me b/c I’m the Jew and he’s the black guy.” A candidate should be able to stand on his record. I haven’t heard any of Raitport’s ideas. What is he planning for the community, black & chassidic? Has he outlined what he plans to do to curb crime?

  • Ignorance destroys

C.H as a welfare community has allowed the Democrats to strip it’s community of self respect and self esteem. your leaders are no different than a Jesse Jackson and the likes looking out for themselves while using you as pawns.

  • To Never Laughed So Hard In My LIfe!

Do you live in a cave? Or New York State?

Maybe if you did some research, or at least ask nicely in the comments one of us will tell you…for starters…

Do you know who the governor is? Maybe? His name is David Patterson, and yes his a democrat.
Do you know who the assembly speaker is? You don’t? His name is Sheldon Silver.
Do you know why he is speaker? I thought you might guess, because the Democrats hold a majority of the assembly.
In summary of todays lesson, Democrats hold all major offices including overwhelming majority of the legislator. So the state of the state is and only is the Democrats fault.

Now maybe you can tell us why the national stage matters to our local state taxes, and fare hikes, and tolls, etc…
Go look how many other states are managing quite well in this economy. So what’s going on in ny is ny’s problem ruled by Democrats for the longest time.

So while your educating yourself on who’s who in our state I will voting republican and voting Raitport for Assembly.

Yes and while reading you ignorant comment I “Never Laughed So Hard In My LIfe!”

  • Danger for Yidden

Fact is, we should take a message from what is going on around the country. AN OVERWHELMING REPUBLICAN COMEBACK, because obviously they have done nothing more than put us into more debt, exacerbate illegal immigration, and put our country at the brink of a civil war. They only want more and more control, and for government to get bigger and bigger. They want to regulate everything, and ration whatever they can get their hands on. We Yidden should know what happens when governments get too big. The yidden never gain.
On November 2nd, don’t forget to take the trash out. Vote Republican.

  • Never Laughed So Hard In My LIfe!

The economic crisis we are in currently is the result of 8 years of republican rule. Republicans ruined this country, handed over to a guy who in two years, averted a complete collapse of the financial system and who turned a 600,000 lost jobs a month situation into a few thousand jobs gained per month.

Now, Republicans want to blame the unemployment numbers on the guy who saved the day. The same unemployment crisis THEY CREATED.

    What a Chutzpah!!!!!!

  • Att. # 1

Why are certain people always so obsessed with discrimination?!

If there was a good black republican candidate, then they would be the one to get my vote.

tell me what Dov Hikind has done for Crown Heights… Plenty HOW? How did Dov Hikind do all he did for CH when he isnt even in our district…

Why is it that we need his help here in CH???

    its simple

Hees the “Chasidic White guy” and he has a freaken heart.

Its time that CH gets our own voice our own heart and becomes republican.

Ever thought what type of message Carim will get along with ALL the other elected officials when we put one of our own in a governmental seat? how about even if he doesn’t get elected.

What type of message will they get when they know that our community is divided and still we gave a few thousand votes to Raitport?

Its simple, We will get much more.

If you think that the polititions will have “animosity” towards us… thats just plain stupid as they know next time we will vote them out.

look at the other communities you think for a second the elected officials are able to play games, not the jews nor the non jews can mess up bc if they do someone else will step fwd and run in their place.

look at our local PAC! (hecht, sperlin, vaad)

what will they do this term over the past.

They already are putting pressure on all the local officials to do more, otherwise they will loose them…

if you think about it… what role will they need to play in our community if all the elected officials become one of our own, independent from them and help our community direct?

    hmm nothing at all.

This is the very reason why they dont endorse a new candidate even though its one of our own. (tough choice)

I have no problem with having things stay the way they are, but its time we give the ones responsible for getting things done… a Kick in the pants.

Mark my words… your vote for raitport will mean.. no pics of these polotitions in CH just visiting, you will see pics of them delivering big checks (that are not pledges)

    VOTE FOR RAITPORT

To #3: sure, keep on trying to convince yourself of that. Ignore completely the fact that of those “8 years of Republican rule,” Congress was in Democratic hands for the last two of them – precisely the years in which the current economic mess began. Ignore the fact that unemployment during those 8 (or rather 6) years of Republican rule was a third to a half of what it is now. But go ahead, keep on kidding yourself that only the Democrats know how to run the economy. Go ahead and keep on voting for more of the same, until the entire United States goes the way of Greece and Iceland.

  • hand outs

A vote for a democrat is today a vote for the nanny state. It might sound get the benefits but Jews help Jews and do not rely on the government. When money passes through the government hand much gets syphon off. They throw a pitance and keep the rest. There is no such thing as a free lunch somebody pays.

You are certifiably crazy. The few thousand jobs…temporary CENSUS WORKERS!! Unemployment is today over 105% when Obama came in it was what….6? 7? Even 8? But it wasn’t over 10.

Get your head out of the sand, buddy. Republicans haven’t been in office for 2 years. Have things improved since George Bush left office? Ask your neighbors. Stop blaming Bush when Obama hasn’t fixed one darn thing HE says Bush is responsible for. And stop living in a communist cult. Stop drinking the Obama Kool-aid.

  • Inda Know

Hey, he never sold me a rotten chicken. But then again, neither has Mr. Camara!

  • to 1

Is it hate? Do you see people for their color?

Because reading this article, I have not seen one issue you allude too.
Actually I see a contrast and reason why we should vote for Raitport.

Now as far as camara why don’t you do some research for yourself, can you tell us his position on taxes,
    http://tinyurl.com/244xae3

When taxes go up, it goes up for all residents in the district. When MTA fare will to up it will go up for everyone. Every new law and regulation affects everyone.

Do you have a job? Because I know many who don’t. And what is our current assemblyman doing about it?

Maybe instead of all your ridiculous comments go read up on the issues, go help someone who needs a job.

We are ALL, no matter of race, in this sinking ship together and the democrats have ruled locally for the longest time. So its time to make a difference starting with every single vote, from every single resident in the 43rd district.

BTW are you even registered to vote?

  • Moderate

I agree with #5. Two years is not a long time for one person to change a whole system for the better, especially when the citizens can’t keep changing their mind and expect much to be done overnight. He’s ONE person!

Unemployment was growing well before President Obama became elected: http://www.miseryindex.us/u

Dick Cheney MADE MONEY off of the war through Halliburton. George Bush gave lined the pockets of his family through bogus contracts for education. Donald Rumsfeld MADE MONEY from the “bird flu” pandemic. They make money off of FEAR MONGERING tax payers. They’re greedy businessmen, nothing else.

Stop blaming crime on the local politicians. CH is constantly changing and yes, there are some bad apples but it’s their choice to do harm to others, not the politicians. There is crime everywhere.

You commenters are hypocritical and whine so much about how not enough is done for you, you, you. You call him a socialist or communist yet you want welfare and for the police to be there for you at every second on every corner.

President Obama has had to make some very tough, unpopular decisions but I sincerely believe he’s a good person doing the best he can in a bad situation. Bush and all his cronies came from wealth and that’s all they know is wealth for them.

  • vote dem all the way

vote republican and your vote will take money away from our yeshivas and our community!

  • Moderate

Correction, I meant “when the citizens keep changing their mind…”

    I second #17’s comment.

  • Ezra

    To #15:

You’re no more a “moderate” than I’m the Tooth Fairy. At least be honest about what you’re representing.

Yes, unemployment was growing before Obama took office. However, as you’ll notice from the chart you so kindly linked to, it started doing so _after_ a Democratic Congress took office (January 2007), and _after_ they raised the minimum wage (July of that year). See any correlation there, maybe?

Your rants about how Bush and Cheney MADE MONEY (why, how horrible!) are quite irrelevant to our discussion here, as is your final point about them coming from wealth. (Naturally, you conveniently ignore the fact that Obama is hardly poor either – how he made plenty of cash from “community organizing” and writing a couple of books full of platitudes and self-praise.) If their FEAR MONGERING was really so bad – kindly explain, would you, how the economy was going gangbusters during much of Bush’s time in office?

“Stop blaming crime on the local politicians” – but it’s okay to blame things on Bush (though, G-d forbid, not on Obama)? Explain why, please? Yes, we can rightly blame those “local politicians” for taking the easy way out by harassing law-abiding citizens rather than the criminals.

No, we’re not concerned about how “not enough is done for you, you, you.” We want the government – Federal, state, and local – to stick to its proper job – in particular, providing for the common defense – and to stop sticking their greedy hands into our pockets for social engineering programs that just keep people in a permanent state of dependency.

  • AntiTroll

typical liberals don’t read don’t listen just say what you want again again …..copy and pasting liberal talking points and may I add they are not from Crown Heights Jewish community.

We got ourselves some trolls. Must be a very desperate time for liberals if the liberal hunters found their way here.

November 2, 2010 will be a big victory for republicans and a downfall for liberal destruction.

About our money that you think you giving us back, well its ours, don’t take it and don’t give back. Keep your honey and keep your sting!

    1. Yes, I have a full time job. I am a hard working citizen and I pay my taxes.

    2. I am a registered voter and I consider it my patriotic duty to vote for the candidate that I feel will do the best job.

    3. I never said that Camara is wonderful and perfect. All I’m saying is that I still have not heard Raitport give any specific ideas on what he plans to do and what he stands for. I see so many ppl jumping on the bad wagon to vote for him b/c “he is one of us.” What does that even mean????? Politically? Racially? Religiously?

    4. I’m not racist but remember that racism is a two way street.

  • Mendy Hecht

There’s another issue here: Our conservative beliefs. Who says that just because the system in New York State is heavily Democratic, we must vote for people who only care about our votes but do not share our values?

There is another option. Vote for Raitport.
