NYC Mayor Celebrates 600 Red Light Cameras in Questionable Milestone
by CrownHeights.info
New York City has officially reached 600 intersections equipped with red light cameras, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday, declaring another milestone in the city’s ongoing effort to make its streets safer.
The city insists the cameras are saving lives. According to the Department of Transportation, red-light running has dropped by more than 80% at intersections with cameras, while injuries from T-bone crashes have declined by 70%.
The administration says the expansion fulfills its commitment to public safety, with the cameras installed at intersections selected partly because of histories of crashes and injuries. City data also indicates that 95% of vehicles caught running red lights in 2025 received no more than one or two violations, while fewer than 0.7% received five or more.
That is the city’s defense. The skeptics’ concern is that a program capable of issuing tickets around the clock can become a reliable source of revenue, even when its stated purpose is deterrence. The mayor’s announcement did not provide a breakdown of how much revenue the expanded program is expected to generate, leaving residents to wonder whether success will ultimately be measured by fewer dangerous drivers or by a growing stack of violations.
For Crown Heights residents, the debate is especially familiar. Between parking enforcement, alternate-side regulations, speed cameras and the daily challenge of navigating Brooklyn traffic, many motorists already feel that driving in New York City comes with a financial penalty attached to nearly every wrong turn or moment of inattention.
With all 600 permitted intersections now equipped with cameras, Mayor Mamdani has reached the current limit under state law. Transportation safety advocates are already looking toward the 2027 legislative session to seek authorization for further expansion.

And now, they’re also giving $50 tickets for double parking in “bus corridors”. The cameras the buses have for bus lanes, are now be used for that too.
