NYCHA Pauses Section 8 Waitlist and Voucher Issuance

Pix11

The New York Housing Authority has put a pause on one of its most critical programs in an effort to combat a nationwide issue.

Following the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s announcement in March that it would be ending the Emergency Housing Voucher program, NYCHA is beginning to transfer EHV households to the traditional Housing Choice Voucher Section 8 program.

The EHV program was formed in 2021 as part of the American Rescue Plan and has helped NYCHA stabilize roughly 5,500 NYC households in that time. Now that NYCHA needed to transition those on the EHV program to the Section 8 program, the 200,000 families that made it onto the Section 8 waitlist will have to wait even longer for a voucher.

There has been people I know on that section waitlist for over 10 plus years and then they came out with this section 8 program but for nycha only so you can’t go out of New York with it. It’s not the same people want the regular section 8 that allowed to move freely to another state. It’s so sad now they putting a pause on a program that is much needed for a lot of people seeking housing.

That’s great now I’m not surprised from the city. That’s so corrupted. Been waiting to relocate from the worst home that I live in right now to recover from my injuries and my depression. Now I’m hearing this I’m not surprised.

Too good to be true. I was called off of the Housing Choir Wait-list in June. I brought up all requested documents. By June 30th, I was told that the Section 8 Program was closed. This Letter came from NYC HPD. They are working hard to get it to reopen again. I live in an 8 by 10 foot room for twenty years.I was hoping for something better but I have to admit it isn’t coming. You have to be real.
