
NY State Court of Appeals Overturns NYC Law Permitting Noncitizens to Vote Locally
The highest court in New York State has struck down a New York City law which, if it had gone into effect, would have allowed noncitizens to vote in municipal elections.
Politicians and others who had challenged the measure, called Local Law 11, said that the decision was a victory for voting rights. By contrast, advocates for immigrants and other noncitizens said that the ruling runs counter to election freedoms and say that they’ll try to find other ways to ensure that noncitizen legal residents can participate in local elections.
