New Proposal Would Install Traffic Cameras to Catch Illegal Parking in NYC
New York City could implement traffic cameras to monitor and ticket illegal parking, thanks to new legislation proposed in the state Assembly.
The legislation, first reported by Gothamist, would create a pilot program installing 150 traffic cameras across the city to rein in drivers who double park and block key infrastructure, like bike lanes, loading zones and fire hydrants.
Under the $35 million proposal, drivers caught illegally parking would get a ticket in the mail with fines up to $50 for the first offense and $250 for additional offenses within a year.
