Mayor in Crown Heights to Announce New Speed Cams

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference in Crown Heights this morning, August 26, to announce a new initiative to install 20 speed cameras in school zones.

The press conference took place on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Bedford Ave., in front of the W.E.B. Dubois Academic High School.

As the school year approaches, the city is stepping up efforts to catch drivers who go too fast near schools.

The state Legislature agreed in June to let the city set up 20 to 40 speed cameras in school zones to catch and deter speeders.

The cameras record the speed of passing vehicles. Tickets are issued automatically.

The cameras are being set up in chronic speeding spots within a quarter-mile of some schools.

Bloomberg said in June that speeding is the biggest contributor to traffic deaths citywide.

Wow he sure can milk every cent out of taxpayers. In the name of keeping our children safer? Please don’t make me laugh. All this man cares for is himself. Self righteous (expletive) I can’t wait till he’s out of office for good.

I don’t see myself in any pictures. Why was I not told about this?

    Chanina did you go?

  • RR

Yeah for the money. I can’t wait either until he is gone for good. So anything over 30mph will be a ticket?

  • More info please

    Can anyone answer:
    What constitutes a “school zone”?
    How is it marked?
What hours does it apply to?
    Thanks

where can I speed and where can I not?Why won’t they tell us where these cameras are, so I can speed when I’m not around them?

That is the worst place, no speed bumps & cars race to make the light. It’s so dangerous for our kids, its a neis no one has been hurt or killed by the speeders.

    I like comment #1!

Another scheme to extort money from the public. The rules and regulations are vague in order to give more opportunity to issue tickets so he can fund his anti everything campaigns, like the ones on soda, the bris, guns, the notice to request people to wear proper clothing in a store and so-forth.

I agree with you fully ULY #7. Like you said perhaps speed bumps are the answer. I don’t like this sneaky govt intrusion fining you whenever they feel like it in the name of making you, safer, healthier, more polite. Living in NY is expensive enough what with tickets for double parking, fire hydrants, alternate side parking (shtuyot) not to mention the cameras at lights. Please enough is enough. I’m all for keeping our kids safer but I can see from how this thing is set up that it is nothing more than a scam to extort money from innocent drivers.
