NYC Getting 2nd Heat Wave, Temps to Hit Triple Digits

Temperatures from the upper 90s to low 100s are expected to roll into the city now until Thursday. A heat advisory has been issued until midnight Monday.

This week’s scorching temperatures may even get Mayor Bloomberg desperate for a Big Gulp.

Temperatures from the upper 90s to low 100s are expected to roll into the city now until Thursday, according to the National Weather Forecast’s gripping heat-index.

A heat advisory has been issued until midnight Monday with New Yorkers and those in parts of neighboring New Jersey expected to feel triple-digit temperatures Wednesday and Thursday.

The organization warns that more advisories may come with Monday’s heat advisory having a “pretty good possibility” of extending into Tuesday, a day slated to see temperatures around 96 or 97 degrees, according to NOAA meteorologist Lauren Nash.

The breaking point is expected for Saturday with heat-index temperatures finally dropping just below 90 degrees.

“Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity, if possible,” NOAA advises.

More than 400 cooling centers between the five boroughs opened Sunday to prepare for the potential surge in heat-related illnesses, the Office of Emergency Management reported. Their locations can be found by dialing 311 or visiting nyc.gov.

“OEM urges New Yorkers to take precautions to prevent serious illness that can result from the heat, especially among vulnerable individuals such as seniors and those with chronic health problems,” the office states.

Parts of metropolitan New Jersey under threat include Eastern Union, Eastern Essex, Eastern Bergen and Hudson Counties.

The heat wave will be the second this month for the region with temperatures already running several degrees above average in the Northeast thanks to July’s steamy start.

In New York City, Newark and Philadelphia temperatures were three or four degrees above average during the first 13 days of July.

That first weekend New Yorkers broke an all-time record for electricity use on a Sunday when the heat index rose to 105 degrees on July 7.

The use was 275 megawatts higher than the 2005 record set on July 22 for 10,866 MW used.
