Heat Wave is Going to Stick Around For a While

The Tri-State may be in for one of the hottest weeks of the summer.

Since the mercury has topped 90 degrees for three straight days, the area is officially in its first heat wave of the season — and it won’t be cooling off any time soon.

The punishing humidity is expected to smother the city for the next seven days.

WCBSTV meteorologist said temperatures later in the week will feel like the triple digits, due to the humidity returning.

“It’s very possible Thursday’s feels-like temperature will be 105 degrees, while it will feel closer to 110 on Friday.”

65+ Beware

You’re healthy, active and you’re enduring this week’s heat wave without any trouble. Does it matter if you’re over 65? Scientists say yes. Feeling good doesn’t mean you’re safe.

There are changes in an older person that raise the risk for heat stroke and other problems. An older body actually contains far less water than a younger one. Older brains can’t sense temperature changes as well, and they don’t recognize thirst as easily.

Summer heat is an underappreciated killer, claiming by some estimates as many as 1,000 U.S. lives each year — more than any other type of weather.

One federal study found 40 percent of heat-related deaths were in people 65 and older. Yet research has shown many people over 65 don’t think the warnings apply to them — because they don’t think they’re “old.”
