Street Sweepers May Get Cameras to Give Tickets

AP

The Bloomberg administration is seeking state approval to install cameras on some of the Sanitation Department’s street cleaners in a pilot program aimed at taking the burden off traffic agents in enforcing alternate-side parking rules.

A bill before the state Legislature would give the city permission to mount the cameras on a limited number of sweepers that service routes in 25 of the city’s 59 community districts.

The New York Times reports that the pilot program, if approved, would free sanitation and traffic enforcement officers to focus their time elsewhere.

The bill was introduced last month by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, a Long Island Republican.

It has not been introduced in the Assembly, and the Times say no one in the Senate has yet signed on to sponsor it.

This is a great idea, IF AND ONLY IF it “takes the burden off traffic agents” whether they like it or not. In other words, if this REPLACES the enforcement by traffic agents, then it’s a good thing; if it SUPPLEMENTS that enforcement then it’s a bad thing. Buses should have the same thing: anyone standing at a bus stop or in a bus lane when the bus comes should have his picture taken, and automatically get a ticket, while traffic agents should NOT ticket for this. The reason is obvious: parking on the wrong side, or in a bus lane or at a bus stop, harms nobody so long as the street cleaner or bus is not there; the harm comes only when and if the street cleaner or bus arrives, so that should be a guaranteed ticket.

  • Humm interesting

This idea would make sence if one can park back on the street after the truck goes by then I would say it sounds awesome but that’s not his goal it’s to give as many tickets as he can

  • Where do they live?

Ahh the little devils are still at work thinking up better ways to torture us.

Guaranteed those thinking up these asinine laws don’t live in the city limits and for sure don’t live in CH.
