This is the view a bus driver gets from his crossover mirrors.
Four-year-old Yoily Englander OBM was killed by a truck as he rode a tricycle in Brooklyn. The driver apparently could not see a boy whose head barely reached the bumper.
But the driver might well have seen Yoily had the truck been equipped with a mirror that showed the pavement directly in front of the truck. This is called a crossover mirror.
School buses have them. City Hall has long asked Albany to require them on big trucks. But the industry cried about expense, and the Legislature balked.
The cost of each mirror, installed, is roughly $100. The cost of inaction was Yoily’s life.

while yes the mirror may have saved yoily’s life, more importantly what was he doing in the street with out a adult holding his hand. The driver clearly would have seen an adult, don’t always look to put the blame elsewhere.
There have been many needless deaths in our communities over the years and the key to all of them in lack of proper adult supervision, allowing small children to go out and play and no one out side to watch them is the real issue here.
Stop scape goading and take responsibility for your children.
if the driver was truly at fault he would have been issued a summons or even arrested for negligent homicide.

#1. that is cruel. All that is being said as we see, is that the special mirrors should be installed to save further lives.
There is a good point here that all trucks should have these to prevent further issues, may it never ever happen to anyone’s child. Why would you accuse them of scape-goating when this can be used to prevent further grief. When I pull out of somewhere I do check before I pull out, but I am relieved when I”ve checked carefully and once I’m out, I am relieved that everything is ok….and with a truck driver who drives all day for his job, I would think that this could be a regulation. makes alot of sense when there are areas where small children reside and there are many trucks as well, no?

to # 2 I have driven a large trucks and tractor trailers, while yes these mirrors may help, if you are driving down the road and a toddler or even an adult runs out into the street,
1. a truck cannot stop on a “dime” like a car, a box truck running in NYC can carry loads of about 35,000 lbs, a tractor trailer can be up to 80,000lbs and can take over a hundred feet or more to stop in an emergency/
2. you totally miss the point of a parents responsibility to supervise their children
3. why was the child in the road and how did he end up in front of a moving vehicle is the real point!
4. it is obvious to me that perhaps you do not even drive a car, for some minivans have the same blind spots as trucks should we also install these mirror on mini vans.
To R Gould
Nice try. The driver drove onto the sidewalk and dragged Yoily onto the street while his horrified mother was trying to get the driver to stop.

Unforunately, some children just run onto the street with their parents trying to stop them, but in that quick second or two, something tragic can ch”v happen beyond control of the parents. It only makes sense that people driving on the street should have to take whatever measures there are in nature to prevent such tragedies from happenning. If that means spending the $100 on a mirror, then yes, of course they should do it.
Terrible Tragedy
We can comment 24/7 about who is at fault, but we mortals fail to remember that no one can stop the malach hamaves….
disappointed
If #4 is correct then the driver should have been given & summons & charged with manslaughter since his reckless conduct of needlessly driving onto a sidewalk especially on a wide street like Bedford Avenue

to #4 so how would the mirrors help if he road up on the side walk, there seems to be facts missing here, was the driver issued a summons etc..please elaborate on what really happened here.
