NY State Senators Seek Ban on Doctors’ Neckties

Some lawmakers in Albany want a state law to prohibit doctors from wearing neckties in hospitals.

The proposal made Tuesday cites a study that shows bacteria that could lead to serious infection can be carried on ties and other loose-fitting clothing.

The Independent Democratic Conference in the state Senate is calling for the legislation to redress what they consider a fashion emergency.

Republicans have a 32-30 advantage over Democrats in the chamber, but the independent caucus has at times sided with the GOP.

The independent Democrats are Sens. Jeffrey Klein of the Bronx, Diane Savino of Staten Island, David Valesky of central New York, and David Carlucci of Orange and Rockland counties.

    im actually for the vote. i studied medicine and i know for a fact that ties can carry bacteria from patient to patient and cause nosocomial infections (secondary infections when the bodies immune system is down – nosocmial infections from hospitas are VERY serious which is why medical staff want o treat the patient and ship them out. so they dont get sicker). i really hope this vote gets passed

    Great! I had to wear a tie to school and now have to wear it on all my rotations. I hope this law passes soon. I noticed how many doctors have to get their tie or other equipment out of their way before and during procedures, and I have had my tie ‘land’ on patients during exams and procedures.

    It’s a serious issue, but I don’t see why a law is needed. Doctors should know not to wear ties in hospitals, and if you see one wearing one you should protest, just as you would if you saw one not change gloves between patients.

    Maybe a law is required preventing hospitals from *requiring* doctors to wear ties.

    A law is needed. In many hospitals, and in most medical schools, male physicians are required to wear a tie. These ties land on everything and anything. Children grab the tie to play with it. Etc.. Etc.. Etc… Ties are spreading germs.

    Well?Are ties one of the causes of the spread of some diseases? If they are, then why is anyone against a law? If they are not, then they are not. Cite the evidence, and be done with it, wouldn’t you say?
