Report: Ticket Fixing Scandal to Rock NYPD

AM New York

The city’s top cop, Ray Kelly, acknowledged that there is an investigation into alleged ticket fixing within the NYPD, but declined to comment specifically about reports that dozens of crooked cops could end up arrested in the scandal.

The Daily News first reported Saturday that as many as 40 cops, some of whom are police union delegates, are being investigated in the Bronx for wiping out summonses in exchange for bribes or as personal favors.

“There should be no favoritism at all,” the police commissioner said after a news conference on upgrading police radio technology.

It was unclear whether Kelly was referring to an NYPD Internal Affairs investigation on the ticket fixing or a similar probe by the Bronx District Attorney’s office reportedly covering a period between August 2009 through last June. It’s also unclear what types of tickets were allegedly killed. Taking a bribe is a felony offense.

Website DNAinfo reported Monday that the case is about to break open with a slew of arrests based on thousands of hours of recorded conversations of officers. By the time the entire investigation is completed, hundreds of cops could find themselves caught in the web of the scandal, according to the site.

The Bronx DA declined to comment, and the NYPD and the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association did not return calls seeking comment.

While not legal, it’s been known for cops to expunge a ticket as a favor. However, last June, the NYPD introduced an electronic tracking system that makes it harder to get rid of a ticket.

Well, if the city cant give out tickets whenever necessary for budget reasons then there will be no way to pay for the abundant welfare programs (medicaid, food stamps, section 8 to name a few) that are so vital to the growth of our economy and the creation of jobs.
most people who own cars (and are selfish enough to pollute the air and warm the globe) are wealthy enough that i will not shed tears for them when they have to chip in a little extra for the greater good.
mass transit will suffice for the rest of us.

  • Wow

what do you expect from corrupt Union members. don’t forget the cops get very low starting salary around 27,000 a year so they found a way to make some extra income.
same goes for corretions officers who are selling cell phones to inmates for 1000 a pop.
Get rid of Unions and the corruption, NOW.

  • get a hybrid or low emissions vehicle!!

to #1, when mass transit has you stuck in brooklyn bc of a medical emergency somewhere on the 3-4 lines and a bus would have you getting to work really late and a cab is crazy expensive let me know and ill give you a ride :) (that’s the main reason i bought a car).
