City Cracks Down On Idling Cars Outside Schools

NEW YORK, NY [NY1] — The council passed a bill Wednesday making it illegal to idle outside schools for more than 60 seconds.

Elsewhere, trucks and cars are allowed to idle for up to three minutes.

“We need to send a message to all drivers around schools: Turn your engine off,” said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. “While you are waiting for your child. If it’s one minute, two minutes, five minutes. Turn your engine off. You can still wait. You just have to have your engine off.”

Council members say they are concerned about asthma levels among city children.

A critic of the bill argued that the city should focus on educating drivers about idling instead of imposing fines.

The council also voted to authorize the Parks and Sanitation Departments to enforce idling laws.

What about the other children in the car who will be freezing if we are waiting outside for 15-20 minutes?

Stupid law. Just another excuse to milk the people. Let’s vote in a new city-council next election and send these Bozos packing.

A lot of pollution that school children are exposed to comes from the busses (diesel fuel).
