BDE: R’ Yechiel Michel Raskin, 92, OBM

With great sadness we report the passing of R’ Yechiel Michel Raskin OBM, a long time resident of Crown Heights and owner of Raskin’s Fruit Store on Kingston Ave. He passed away on Sunday, the 22nd of Teves, 5782.

He was 92 years old.

Michel, one of four brothers, was born in Leningrad to his parents, Reb Aaron Leib Laine and Doba Raiza Raskin OBM, who had much mesiras nefesh for Yiddishkeit in Communist Russia.

His father passed away at the young age of 36, leaving the family to be sustained by his mother. She traveled with her family initially to Poland, then Austria, and finally Paris.

From there, Mrs. Raskin wrote to the Frierdiker Rebbe, asking whether they should seek entry to Israel or to America. The Rebbe advised them to travel to America, and in 1953 they arrived in New York.

Once settled in New York, Michel established Raskin’s Fruit Store located until today on Kingston Ave and President Street.

He is survived by his wife Danya, and his children; Arik Raskin (Crown Heights), Mrs. Gutel Edelman (Deerfield Beach Fl), Mrs. Mashie Markowitz (Crown Heights), Avremi Raskin (Melbourne, Australia), Mrs. Zeldie Treitel (Hampstead, Canada), Shalom Raskin (Crown Heights), as well as many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers Dovid Laine, and Benzion Raskin.

The Levaya will take place Monday, leaving Shomrei Hadaas at approximately 1:00pm, and passing by 770 at approximately 2:00pm.

The family requests that his wife Mrs. Danya Raskin NOT be informed of her husbands passing.

    What a great Jew, I would always stop by the fruit store and he would talk to me about life and sometimes give me free fruit to take home , the last time I saw him about a year ago he told me I’m getting old a direct quote from Rabbi Raskin “this is f*** up “he made me laugh all the time

    What a tragic loss! Such a great Chossid … such a warm and generous yid with a heart of gold and such a chassidishe beindel.
    He was down to earth and friendly to all and had no airs about him.

    He went above and beyond for the Mitzvah of Hachnosas Orchim with such sincere warmth. May Reb Michel z”l beg the Abeshter to send Moshiach right now !
