Texas Lawmakers Greenlight $1 Billion School Choice Voucher Program

The Texas House of Representatives signed off Thursday on a $1 billion school voucher program, in a move that some Jewish groups are hailing as a win for school choice while others are expressing dismay over potential losses for Texas public schools.

Texas is home to 20 private Jewish schools whose students and families stand to have their tuition supplemented up to $10,000 per student by tax dollars, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The legislation passed with near-total Republican support, with two Republican lawmakers joining the Democrats in voting against it. Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to swiftly sign the bill into law once it reaches his desk following a reconciliation process with the Texas Senate.

Hmmm. Say you run a nice Jewish school, running at or close to 100% capacity, maybe even a waiting list of students hoping to get in. Still, you need to ask for donations, run bake sales, etc. trying to balance your budget. Plus, you know your teachers should be paid more.

Suddenly, all of your students are waving around $10k vouchers. Gee, I wonder what you’ll do to tuition rates. Any guesses?

And to answer my previous comment, watch for tuition rates to jump by $10k/student, or close to. This give away won’t save private school families much if anything, but will just take more tax dollars from other programs, or directly from your pockets.

As for “school choice” – you already have it, obviously. But nobody said every choice you make needs to be paid for someone else.
