For people battling the COVID-19 pandemic, the struggle is hard. Without family members by their side, the sometimes futile fight becomes even more difficult.

Twenty five New York State Senators, representing nearly every community, came together in a letter asking Governor Andrew Cuomo to change the rules, allowing family members to visit patients in the hospital as the pandemic continues.

At present, family members are not allowed at patients bedsides throughout New York State, unless the situation is unique, such as childbirth of a person requires special help.

The effort to enact Compassionate Helper Program was initiated by askanim from multiple communities, who came together to make it happen following reports of rampant neglect.

The program calls for allowing a volunteer to stay at the bedside of all patients in the hospital, allowing them to assist in a patients basic, and many times overlooked needs.

Proponents of the change have stated that having family members who are properly protected will only help the hospitals by speeding up a patients healing while lifting a burden from the stressed hospital staff.

Critics have argued that extra people will only be taking up room in hospitals unnecessarily, and without proper training on prevention of disease transmission, are likely to spread the virus.
