Jewish Man Drowns While Dipping in Sea for Mikvah

The seaside town of Aberystwyth in West Wales, United Kingdom.

A rabbi on a seaside holiday in the UK accidentally drowned while performing his daily ritual bathing in the sea. Jewish Orthodox Dov Berish Englander, 47, got into difficulties while performing a mikvah – a full body immersion in water to gain ritual purity.

The rabbi was on holiday from London and staying at the scenic seaside town of Aberystwyth in West Wales when tragedy struck.

Rabbi Englander walked in to the sea for an early morning ritual bath on Thursday, but soon got into difficulties.

A guest at a hotel overlooking the bay rang 999 after seeing him struggling to stay afloat.

A lifeboat and rescue helicopter were sent to the scene and lifeboat crew pulled the rabbi from the water.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was declared dead at Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth.

Rabbi Berish Englander, from Stamford Hill, north London, was described as ‘highly respected’ for his religious knowledge and charitable work.

He was staying at the seaside resort of Aberystwyth – a popular destination for strictly Orthodox families.

A member of the Jewish Orthodox community, who was on holiday in Aberystwyth and knew Rabbi Englander, paid tribute to him.

He said: ‘He was an extremely righteous and very, very prominent and respected rabbi in our community.

‘He was a good example to all. He was the kind of man you would take your children to meet, to use him as an example to the children.

‘He was very kind and generous and gave an enormous amount of money to charity. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.’

Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

In June, Satmar Chasid Rabbi Chaim Breisch died after struggling in a rough sea off Broadstairs, Kent.

    Stamford Hill is in shock…BDE
Lubavitch in London have a swimming pool and all the children have swimming lessons, The girls in 12 grade and the Bochorim in top class of Mechina take a life guarding course. Other Yeshivas around the world should do the same.
Hashem should protect us where ever but we have to make sure all our children are good swimmers.

That’s if your time’s not up…if it is it’s the best way to go while doing a Mitzva…
There’s a Sicha from the Rebbe regarding this.

#1, not sure what you’re “just saying,” but the same Gemara there also says that it’s different where “shchiach hezeika” – the danger is common.

I have no idea whether that’s the case at this resort, but I hardly think that now is the time or place – or my business or yours – to be second-guessing the niftar.

  • Sea water can have dangerous currents

Sea water can be murky. Like 6 said, never swim alone, even if you know how to swim. A lifeguard once told me that even HE can drown!
If, Chas V’Shalom, a swimmer gets caught in a rip current (which sweeps you out to sea), the thing to do is to swim parallel to the shore until you get into a normal current, which pushes you toward the shore. Do not fight the current by swimming against it, most likely won’t win.

  • Still in shock/London

Reb Yissocher Dov, more commonly known as Beirish, was NOT swimming alone, if you read ‘while dipping in sea for Mikvah’ They were 6 or so men who went down to the sea to toivel before shacharis, the 6 split up giving each other space for tevila, Reb Beirish got caught by a current and was pulled out to sea. The others tried to swim to him, but were unable too. This is not about children, Reb Beirish was 47 years old, has 2 married children and one getting married in 2 months and many more beautiful children at home, k”ah. Beirish and his family are tremendous baalei tzedoka and are loved and respected by all. Beirish was one of 6 siblings and still has 2 parents, until 120 years and more!
Please leave all silly comments out, this is not the place for it. I am an employee of the Englander Company and know what I am writing here to be the absolute truth.

  • It doesnt matter if you know how to swim

Currents can still be extremely strong. I was 10 swimming in the ocean with my uncle and brother and i got pulled under water by a rip tide for over 2 minutes
