The euphoria of yomtov was shattered in Uman on Rosh Hashanah as the news spread of the death of a 19-year-old bachur who drowned toveling in a local river.

The Interfax news agency said the man died while bathing in a pool of water formed at an abandoned mineshaft just outside the Ukrainian town.

The young bachur drownded apparently while toveling in the river about an hour before tashlich. It appears heavy rain was falling at the time and the water temperature was reported to be extremely cold. Unconfirmed reports point to a cardiac incident, perhaps the result of the water temperature.

A brother and friend of the victim were present and they tried to save him, albeit unsuccessfully. They summoned Zaka and responders arrived at the scene with the new Zaka ambulance. Police divers also responded to extricate the body from the water.

One of the mispallalim, a former member of the IDF’s elite Shayetet 13 (Navy SEALS) entered the stormy frigid waters in an effort to save the bachur. He located the body and managed to pull it out of the water. All resuscitation efforts failed to bring him back to life. The body was placed in a refrigeration unit near Kever Rav Nachman.

Zaka official Sammy Grossman reports the event occurred on the first day of yomtov. The levaya will be held in Uman near the tziyun at 21:00 and from there, the body will be flown to Eretz Yisrael for kvura.

Maybe this tragedy will convince people that going to Uman is wrong. There is NO reason to get up and go to Uman. Stop wasting money and leaving your families to go to Uman. Go to Yerushaliam, the ir hakodesh!

what do you mean its wrong to go to Uman! its like saying the Israeli’s should not come to crown heights its a custom for them to go to their rebbe! we come from all over to crown heights to be with the rebbe!

  • DAAS GAAVA

Mr. Daas Torah. Which Torah do you keep???? very obviously it’s not the one that stresses AHAVAS YISROEL AND AHAVAS CHINOM.
I’m just sooooooooooo glad you are not judging any of us on Yom Hamishpat!!!!!! drop your blown up gaava and learn to have compasion for another human being even if he’s a yid and a follower of Nachman. basically, you should hide your head in shame. May Hashem the true and compassionate judge have mercy on your poor lost soul and instill some of the Jewish charachteristic of being a baal rachniun

Israelis should indeed not waste their money coming to CH. They do absolutely nothing, and make a complete mess of our neighborhood. Stay home with your families!

  • Enough!

A yid should go where he can reach the highest spiritual level for the yomim noraim.
You have no right to say people should stop going to Uman. Maybe you should stop going to your parents also? Stop going to the ohel? Stop going to your mother-in -law, or your children? How rediculous!
This was a terrible tragedy. Let’s feel for this young bochur and his family as if he was our own – kol yisroel areivim zeh l’zeh.
May this be the last tragedy – the straw that breaks the camel-of-galus’ back.

#2 once again shows how inappropriate is the name he uses. What chossid doesn’t go to his rebbe for Rosh Hashono if he can? When was it ever heard that chassidim should stay home for Rosh Hashono? How much more so in the case of Reb Nachmon, who specifically asked that people should come to him on Rosh Hashono, and promised his help if they do! Do you really think you’re smarter than Reb Nachmon?! What do you know that he didn’t?

If you think people should be with their families for RH, then how much more so for Sukkos, and yet Chazal tell us “Chayov odom lehakbil pnei rabbo boregel”, and that someone traveling to his rebbe is potur from sukkah because he’s occupied in a mitzvah. How do you explain that, Mr daas heipech hatorah?

#12, who said anything about swimming? Do you really need an explanation of why yidden go into water, especially on a holy day like RH?
