Shooting at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Sparks Panic, President Trump Evacuated

A dramatic security incident brought chaos to the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, after gunfire erupted near the ballroom of the Washington Hilton, forcing the evacuation of President Donald Trump, senior administration officials, and thousands of attendees.
The prestigious event, which traditionally brings together top government officials, journalists, and media personalities, was abruptly halted shortly after 8:30 p.m. when loud shots rang out near the venue’s entrance.
According to multiple reports and eyewitness accounts, a suspect, reported to be a male in his 30’s, assembled a long firearm in an unsecured, makeshift storage room near the terrace-level entrance before approaching the ballroom.
A volunteer at the event described seeing the individual retrieve parts from a bag, assemble the weapon, and then begin firing in multiple directions. She estimated hearing at least ten shots as people fled in terror.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and fear as guests scrambled for safety. Many ducked under tables while security personnel rushed through the ballroom with weapons drawn, directing attendees to safer areas.
Law enforcement personnel quickly responded, securing the area and neutralizing the threat within minutes. During the incident, a Secret Service agent was struck by gunfire but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest. Officials indicated the agent is expected to recover.
Journalists, volunteers, and dignitaries were among the roughly 2,000–2,600 people in attendance when the incident unfolded, creating a mass panic that quickly spread throughout the venue. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was present at the event, later described the situation as terrifying, though he and others nearby were unharmed.
President Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, was swiftly escorted out of the ballroom by Secret Service agents. Officials later confirmed that all individuals under federal protection were unharmed.
Early reports suggest the shooter was able to exploit a gap in security near a lightly monitored storage area close to the entrance.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was officially cancelled. President Trump later indicated that the event would be rescheduled within the next 30 days.
Federal and local authorities, including the FBI and Secret Service, have launched a full investigation into the incident, focusing on how the suspect gained access to the venue and whether he acted alone.
