Family and Friends Gather for the Shloshim of Sruly Woonteiler OBM

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – Its been one month since the tragic passing of HaBochur Sruly Woonteiler OBM, who passed away from the injuries he sustained when the driver of a pickup truck ran him over on a California street, then fled.

Friend and family marked this day with a traditional gathering, a Shloshim in Aliya on East New York Avenue in Crown Heights. Srulys family had arranged a Seudah for the crowd while they heard inspirational words from Rabbi Alter Metzger, who spoke about Mesirus Nefesh and the preparations one must do for the Yomim Noiroim.

The event also marked the beginning of a Safer Torah in Srulys memory, Zalmy Vail a friend of Srulys began auctioning off rights to write the first letters in the torah to the crowd, and raised close to $12,000 in pledges towards the cost of the torah.

Another friend, Ariel Steinherz told a story about Sruly how when he was younger he once fell and broke his leg, and when his friends came to visit him and cheer him up, Sruly cheered his friends up instead!

Rabbi Yossi Jacobson then got up and spoke about the importance of focusing on remembering a person and his life through joy and happiness rather then his death through sadness.
