The New York Department of Motor Vehicles is making more of its services available online.

The department is launching a pilot program to offer an online version of the written learner’s permit tests for cars and motorcycles. It is also piloting a program allowing customers in several locations to register their vehicles online.

As part of the pilot for the online learner’s permit test, some customers who already have a reservation for an in-office exam will be invited to take it online instead. The DMV will eventually make the online option available to all permit applicants later in the fall.

The new online registration program will be available to New Yorkers who live in counties with state-run DMV offices, including New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Albany and Onondaga counties.
