Rabbi Levitansky was a man who was loved by all and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was a wonderful Shliach and a wonderful man and father. California and Lubavitch have really suffered a terrible loss.

Hamokom Yinachem Eschem…Rabbi Levitansky was a true Chossid in every sense of the word – a hard trait to find these days. He will be sorely missed.

My heart goes out to the Levitansky family. Although I regretfully never met him before, his powerful pressence and impact of his dedicated years as Shaliach will be sorely missed. We mourn with you:( We are devastated by your terrible loss…

    Respectfully,

There are no words that can describe “Avremel”. The same Avremel that I knew in Bedford and Dean was the same Avremel when I saw him for the last time by my “einikel’s” bris in Palos Verdes last year. Always B’simcha no matter what problems he had, and never complaining. As a Chasisdisher bochur he grew up to be a real chasidisher Shaliach and a Mekusher to the Rebbe. He should be a Melitz Yosher for his family, his friends and all Klal Yisroel. Your chaver, Yankel.

How about the story of a non religious guy who was engaged to a shikse & about to be wed. His family tried everything to stop the marriage but nothing seemed to help. While going to get thier marriage license with shikse by his side only one thing kept popping in to his head, the image of rabbi Levitansky singing & dancing on the tables on Friday afternoon at C.G.I. of Simcha Monica 14 years earlier. On his way up the steps of the county court house in Berkley, Ca. he starts sweating & getting very uneasy. The shikse asks what’s the matter but he can’t explain. With every step up the court house another vision of rabbi Levitansky singing a camp song appeared. “I’m big gedalya goomber.. “ The visions of rabbi Levitansky kept plaguing him “hasem is here hashem is there ….. “ As he forces himself to walk up another step, he is paralyzed by the image of rabbi Levitansky singing I’m a Jew & I’m proud & sing it out loud …. He abruptly stopped in his tracks & told the shikse he can’t go thru with it. This is what you get from a person as true as rabbi Levitansky.

To anyone who witnessed today, it was clear that we lost a giant. People came from literally every sector of the community and far beyond and everyone speaks of him on a very personal level – this barely touches the surface of the magnitute of who was R’ Avremel Levitansky.

I have known Reb Avrohom for over 30 years.

    His warmth was incomparable.
He brought yiddishkeit to s. Monica.
Watered it,Nurtured it, made it grow and influenced a whole community.

He spread hope, faith and joy to all who came within his “daled amos”
He would bounce about spreading torah and yiddishkeit.

    …… The loss is tremendous.
    I am heartbroken.
We who knew him are heartbroken.
How much more is the pain for his family.

    HaMakom yenachem et’chem b’toch shar avay’lay Tzion vee’Yerushalayim

RABBI LEVITANSKY ALWAYS LIVED TO DO THE REBBE’S ROTZON PROUDLY AND WITHOUT COMPROMISE SINCE HE WAS A BOCHUR. WE WENT TO ONE OF THE ONLY FRUM DAY SCHOOLS IN CHICAGO IN THE 1950’S AND LOST TOUCH WHEN THE JEWISH NEIGHBORHOOD CHANGED AND EVERYBODY MOVED.JUST TO EXPLAIN THE ATSMOPHERE IN CHICAGO IN THE LATE 1950’S AND EARLY 1960’S, THIS WAS A TIME WHEN FRUM PEOPLE IN CHICAGO WERE UNDER CONSTANT ATTACK, WHEN WEARING A YARUMLKE INTEAD OF A HAT INVITED INSULTS OR WORSE IF YOU WERE A KID IN MOST PARTS OF “JEWISH” CHICAGO. WELL, WHEN AVREMEL WAS ABOUT 17 OR 18 HE CAME BACK TO CHICAGO TO SPEAK AS A MERKOS SHLIACH. IN A TIME WHEN JUST ABOUT NO ADULT WORE A BEARD (EXCEPT FOR THE CHABAD SHLIACH RABBI ZALMAN HECHT OBM AND RABBI HERSHEL SHUSTERMAN OBM AND PERHAPS A FEW OTHERS) AVREMEL CAME TO CHICAGO WITH A FULL, UNROLLED JET BLACK BEARD.
THE EFFECT WAS SENSATIONAL AND SHAMEFUL. HE WAS INSULTED TO HIS FACE AS “OLD FASHIONED” AND MUCH WORSE, WAS ASKED TO LEAVE OUR SHUL WHEN HE GOT UP TO SPEAK. HE SPOKE ANYWAY,NOT BOTHERED AT ALL BY THE COMMENTS, ANSWERING EVERYONE WITH A SMILE,AND GOT THE ADMIRATION OF THE CROWD.HIS MESSAGE WAS TO BE PROUD, NOT DEFENSIVE, OF BEING A FRUM JEW EVEN IN CHICAGO!!!( I HAVE TO GIVE PRAISE TO HIS PARENTS WHO SUPPORTED HIM 100 PERCENT EVEN WHEN MOST OF THE PEOPLE THEY KNOW GAVE THEM A HARD TIME). RABBI LEVITANSKY FUFILLED HIS MERKOS SHLICUS FROM THE REBBE AND DID HIS PART IN TRANSFORMING THE CITY.
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HIS EFFECT IN S. MONICA

was a very sp. neshoma picked by the REBBA RESHAB to be a chosid , and he lived evry day to the letter of the word , “ AVREMEL SEND MOSHIAC TODAY ”

  • close to the family - like all of us

Definitely a special neshama, and each of us can try to take one small lesson of his example
Do something l’iluy nishmoso – not just praising him on line – that’s the easy part! Take on a hachlata for Avreml
Also, anyone that knows the family understands their dire situation – rent, chasunahs to still make, IYH, and day to day living – Please give generously – Avreml never hesitated to help anyone, whether he had the money in the bank, or he would “cover it somehow” Now is your opportunity to do for him and his wife and children
