Interesting; I suggested to some friends that we farbreng and tell chassidisha meisers. I told them I had asked one rav (not on beis din) who permitted it. They responded: ”You can’t do that! That’s learning Torah! The Rebbe played chess, so we should play chess. Ask a rav on our beis din, they continued.
I couldn’t reach a rav on the beis din but contacted one who was a teacher of my friend (and myself). He responded:
“It’s learning Torah,” he said. “Even the actions of the avos were deemed ‘Torah,’ because we learn something from their actions. Can you read plain stories in the Chumash on Nitel Nacht? No you can’t. The tzadikim were very holy. All their actions were (are) Torah.”
Getting through to our beis din a well-known rav permitted it. He poo pooed the other negative assertioins and said it wasn’t really ‘Torah,’ but makkif. It is certainly permitted he stressed.
“Don’t we have to copy the Rebbe and play chess?” I queried. “No” he answered. The Rebbe never commanded others to play chess. “Who knows,’ responded the rav, ”perhaps the Rebbe said chassidishe meisers as he played!“
So, it seems, it would be fine to have a farbregen ea nitel and tell chassidishe meisers, ”I think?”
Plenty of mis-information in Crown Heights.
Nittel
Its so funny to see bochrim leaning over chess boards- lehavdil, its a good sign that its funny to people , because it means we are b”h so used to people learning!
out-of-towner
To Reb Hoffinger;
It’s not misinformation, it’s simply a difference of opinion.

i agree with nittel……and i wish i knew how to play chesssss…….very crittical game and if u can figure out gemara u can for sure figure out chess!
ATTENTION, BORUCH BEN TZVI
If meises of the Rebeim are not for us to learn from, how to lead our lives as better Jews and better chasidim, and therefore are permissable to farbreng with on nittel then we’ve got a big problem…..
(with all due respect to the rav that feels it’s ok.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures!
By the way what is the question– I have asked Rabbonim over the years about learning stories of the tzadim, etc. on nitel. We don’t do it, and it is customary by Chabad Chasidim, esp. bochurim to play chess on nittel–so it is a pleasure to see these pictures.
Mendy in Midwest
long live the king
and the queen and the rook

nitel is for chess
and butten sowing at best
farbrangen’s and chasidishe ma’asios
are forms of torah
and we would not want to be “mosif chayos” with that.
(even if the pic of the rabayim is not nitel but when the rayyaz was on “datche” it is still a graet thing to do when WE DO NOT LEARN TORAH
note that this is only the minhag of chasidim!!)

Since when is a Shul/Bais Medrash a place for chess playing? Play board games in your home or dorm. Ribbono Shell Oylum!!
Also I feel as if I missed out on a big Mitzvah “the Rebbe played chess, so we should play chess”…I wonder if checkers is ok. What about dominos or monopoly. If anyone knows please write back and let me know.
