Dear residents of Crown Heights,

I am a parent of Ka“h a large family.

My children have and are attending regular Lubavitch schools in Crown Heights and B”H are doing well. My son however, was not doing well in school. He was unhappy and did not enjoy going to school.

A Letter From A Parent

Dear residents of Crown Heights,

I am a parent of Ka“h a large family.

My children have and are attending regular Lubavitch schools in Crown Heights and B”H are doing well. My son however, was not doing well in school. He was unhappy and did not enjoy going to school.

He found it hard to stay focused in class and found himself getting easily distracted in a large classroom setting. As a result, he kept himself busy doing “other things”. He found himself strolling the hallways and getting detention often.

I was getting frustrated, to say the least.

My mind was made up and I decided to place him in Darchai Menachem. The small classes and individualized learning system which focused on the academic and social needs of each student was what my child needed.

The change in him was noticeable right away. It was unbelievable!.

Learning became fun! The positive feedback he was receiving from his teachers was truly raising his self esteem. He no longer looked at himself as a failure, and we had our creative, fun loving, caring son back!

In Darchai Menachem he was not afraid of learning new things but rather appreciated it. He actively participates at our Shabbos table reciting the Parsha and Sichos he has learned. He has joined a Chessed club (see previous article on Sukkos in crown heights info), which the boys themselves have formed, and with the support of their Rebbes are visiting the old aged homes bringing the senior citizens joy.

He enjoys going to Shul and actually joins in with the Minyan.

One day he told me, “In my old school, a school day would last forever and in Darchai Menachem it feels like school is over in ten minutes”.

By the way on his last test he received 103%!

One evening after a hard day at work, I listened to my messages and tears formed in my eyes.
His Rebbe had called! For a minute my heart began to beat faster for in the past a phone call from a Rebbe meant my son had disappointed the Rebbe again. But instead the message had stated that the Rebbe was so proud of the way my son had participated not only in class but in Mincha Davening. I allowed my son to hear the message while the whole family sat around the table. He was beaming with pride! Need I say more?

Yes!

When I saw the advertisement for the Mystery Auction which will be taking place on Wednesday November 8Th at the home of Shaindy Gutnick, I was so excited! (Ed Note: Click Here for more info.)

I want to show my appreciation to the school. They have done so much for my son, who in turn has brought “light” into my home once more! His excitement is contagious and my whole family has benefited from it. And I want to spread the word that everyone should support Darchai Menachem! They are truly paving the way for our children and building a brighter future for our community!

ITS A SHAME THAT WE FOCUS SO MUCH ON SAVING THE REST OF THE WORLD AND INVEST SO LITTLE IN OUR OWN CHILDREN. MOST OF OUR COMMUNITIES HAVE NO SCHOOLS FOR CHILDREN THAT ARE A BIT OUT OF THE MOULD. WE ARE LOSING ALOT OF CAPABLE LUBAVITCHER KIDS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE STYLE SCHOOL FOR ALL OF OUR CHILDREN. I MYSELF HAVE SEEN MANY OF MY FRIENDS THAT THE SYSTEM FAILED, GO ON TO EXCEL IN LAW SCHOOL AND THE BUSINESS WORLD. ITS A SHAME THAT WE DONT HAVE A REBBE TO FORCE US TO TAKE A HONEST LOOK AT THE SITUATION.

  • concerned

for those of us who have children already out of this system, I have to say that personally, I am cynical. I (we) are very happy to hear about this, but hoping that it continues with the same quality, and that there will be alot of respect and support for this yeshiva. Things that have happened to the Rebbe’s children in the past have been less than optimal, and we’re hoping that this school will be a shining example of what the Rebbe wants.

  • fp

everyone should support this school that saves not only her son but many others from not getting enough attention in a school system that does not work for alot of children thank goodness this school is here to do many wonderful things may they have much sucess and we all should stand behind them even if we dont have a child that is in the school

  • another parent

i wish i had this school for my son – then he might have stayed in school and not have such a chip on his shoulder about "religious schools"and probably stayed on track with his yiddishkeit.
its about time someone realized the necessity of a school like Darchai Menachem. not everyone is a studious learner ,most children need alternative ways of learning. school can be enjoyable ,teachers just need to be creative."al pi darko" yasher koach darchai Menachem!
thank you parent for opening up and bringing this problem to the forefront.

  • mother in ch.

Unfortunately the Lubavitch Yeshiva don’t know how to deal with children that are cant’ learn as quickly as others.
I hate to label, but it exsist and many Rebbe’s and Teachers aren’t capable of dealing with 25-30 in the class let alone a child who needs more one-on-one.
I’m so glad that there is a school for these boys ( I wish there were for girls too).
All these children need are more attention and a bit more help and time and they wont go off!!!
Hatzlacha to Ayal’s school and may it go from strengh to strengh.

  • another CH resident

    Wow!

Impressed, it’s like the 2nd article I’ve seen in the past month (chesed articel from sukkos)from Darchai Menachem!!

It’s amazing to see such great progress reports, especially at a time when things aren’t going to well in CH.

Looking forward to hearing more from this great school!!

  • Leo

I know one of the teacher’s in the school, and I happen to know what kind of sacrifices he (and I’m sure all the teachers) make in order to give this school all they got. Anyone that has a little Tzedaka for a special Mitzva, this is definitely a great one.

You will see great kids coming out of this Yeshiva

  • Benny

It’s time we in Chabad practice what the Alter Rebbe taught us, Chanoch lannar AL PI DARKOM!!

  • grateful parent

Rabbi Eyal Bension works with each child and is unbelievable. My son had more severe issues and was not able to make it in Darchei Menachem but Rabbi Bension worked so hard with him. I was really extremely impressed. Today my son is doing very well in Yeshivas Ateres Menachem in Ottawa, another phenomenol school with vocational options for high school boys. We are so lucky to have so many good Lubavitch options.

  • for the first comment

i know people that go there and they told me that in that skewl they feel as if someone cares for them
they pay so much attention to every student’s needs
    it’s really unbelievable
they make every child feel as if they R the world instead of being just another student

keep up the gr8 work u r making the rebbe proud with all the nachas and everyone should go to the auction its a BIG mitzva

  • Annoyed parent

    I agree all the way!
When I was in Oholei Torah, I hated every moment!

It’s a blessing that we do have some "good" schools in our community to save our children!

And it’s a shame that there are some schools still open, that are burning the very last wits out of our children!

    Hashem Yerachem!

  • average parent

thanks for publishing such a beautiful letter.
people should know that in general there is a small percentage of students in school that are very studious and don’t need much to learn as they absorb all learning material. for the general student , there needs to be creativity, involved in learning. understanding the average student is to make school as interesting and challenging yet fun.boys especially need to be more physical in their learning. they need to move . my son was disciplined by a teacher b/c he turned around too much in his seat . another time he needed the bathroom badly and while trying to open the bathroom door was caught by the teacher and was potched b/c he didn’t have permission to use the bathroom. I could tell more but it’ll only open a can of worms. my point is a school like darchai menachem is a school for all children. everbody needs extra attention . everybody needs to be treated respectfully.
any person will always remember their favorite teacher as the one who really cared about me and wanted me to be the best I can be. it sounds to me like Darchai Menacem’s policy is to care no matter what and that to me is all that counts.yasher koach .
for a school that really cares- you have just gained my support.
thank you mom for writing this letter. i’m sure everybody knows one child at least who could benefit from this amazing school. may you go m’chayil l’chayil.

  • A teacher

I love teaching the boys there.
Thay listen and cosentrate in all thir work.

    thank you all!

  • hello

wow ! its really a pitty there arent such skwls for girls . i really think everyone should go to the mystery auction to help support the few good skwls that there are so they can keep up their gr8 work!

  • CH Parent

I don’t think this letter was meant to put down other Yeshivos.

I know for certain that Yeshiva Darchai Menachem would not appreciate their success being made by putting down other ones.

I find that every Yeshiva caters to their students, and we as parent have to do the work on finding which one is best for our child.

My son in OT is doing very successful thanks to their school system and my other son in DM is also doing very well.

I have two daughters that attend both Beis Rivkah and Bnos Menachem, and are both doing extremely great in their schools.

Like the Rebbe says, we have to raise are kids "al pi darchai". It is our responsibilty to find the right and appropriate path for them.

  • sinking

i have a daughter who is inthis situation. doesn’t fit the mold, meaning behavior problem or academic problem, (elementary age)is there a darchei menachem for girls..help we are sinking.

  • Ha Ha

    to "Annoyed parent"

this doesn’t sound like a parent, it sounds more like my little brother (age 13).

  • Y & S

Our son is in the Mesifta class, and comes home EVERY day happy, boruch Hashem!!
Is anybody interested in opening such a school for girls? They count, too!

  • amazed

it’s striking to see how much anger and resentment people have toward the other chabad yeshivas in crown heights. how is it that the rebbe’s mosdos could be so terrible?!

  • aiginer

i am happy to hear about darchei menachem ,believe me,the other 2 yeshivos are fretting that other yeshivos are soon opening!

  • ffffffffffffffffffff

if we whould support our own yeshivoth are chinuch would be alot better ask rabbi dechter or rabbi simpson of ULY how hard it is to get a dime out of anash uly would always compere its salaries to chaim berlin and torah temima or torah vodaath 12 years ago thay were 10 thousand dollars ahead of our melamdim by now who knows the rebbe whold demand that melamdim get raises in the days of the rashag when the rebbe said to give a raise there was a raise what a chosid he was today the vaad doseant evan pay the melamdim what thay owe them a busha vecharpa bootom line you get what you pay for

  • for a future student

I was actually told by my regular yeshiva that my son needs to go to Darchai Menachem as my yeshiva was worried that if he continued failing the way he was that he might go "off the derech" in the future. my son was not a truble maker -he jjust found school not stimulating, borring and the large classes made him feel lost. I challenge the community to help us. my son is not the only boy who feels this way, I wish I could help him but I just can’t afford to switch him as i can’t even make the tuition payments now. I understand the cost when it comes to a school like Darchai Menachem. after all a small class of ten students per teacher is expensive.each teacher needs to get paid , and ofcourse all the overhead for a school costs as well. so I turn to the community , the school does wonders. EVERY CHILD THAT HAS GONE TO DARCHAI MENACHEM IS A SUCCESS STORY!, so they must be doing something right!
and a success story for a family is a success for our community and our future. people of our community SHOULD put the education of OUR children as # 1.we can do that by supporting Darchai Menachem. If the school had enough supporters I and others would be able to afford to send our children there.
    community lets help our own!
    they are our future!
lets go to the Darchai Menachem mystery auction on november 8 and any other event that they have and support this unique system of teaching and learning!!!

  • ME

Darchai Menachem was started by one father to meet the needs of his child. So too the girls, it takes alot of hard work. Why don’t you talk to D.M. for ideas? Hatzlacha Raba.

  • a darchai menachem parent

My son was also one of the boys lost in the school system. The current school system can be damaging to those who don’t fit in. He is currently in D.M. and we are amazed at his turnaround. There is still work to be done, but he has made great progress! For the first time in years, he is scoring 90s and 100s on his tests!

    This school needs everyone’s support.

  • mrs. wilansky montreal

it seems to be that darchei menachem is doing excellent work with its talmidim…may you just continue to go mechayil el choyil and be matzliach in all future endeavours..everyone should try and partake in their auction next week and i’m sure that you’ll be happy that you did…

  • Chezzy

"maybe ur eyes are too closed not to see in ur daily life how not only we have a rebbe, but he is with us every single moment..
    u need more emunah"

To the moron that wrote the above remark, how dare you question another persons emunah???

If you can ‘see’ the Rebbe, tell me, what does he think of the current situation in crown heights?

    IDIOT!

  • Teacher in Darchei Menachem

It’s realy great to hear that there are so many people out there who support our school, it gives me as a teacher a lot of encouragement when i hear such positive feedback from the community!
I’m proud to be part of the school and i am excited to see that the school’s name is slowly getting out to the public, i anticipate that Darchei Menachem will be a houshold name in crown heights within a couple of years.
The reason for the success of the school i feel is because #1 we treat the kids like mentchen, ( Eg. smiling at them even if they misbehaved and we have to give a punishement). and #2 we have a curriculam that the kids can understand and be independently responsable for.
another importent thing is the great comunication between Parents teachers and principle. these are some of the foundations for success, obviously there are many more details.
keep giving the support, we need it.
and thanks to Crownheights.info for all your postings.

Since making Aliya I have been exposed to many schools, parents and students and have been horrified to find out how many children suffer in the "regular" school system because of the lack of options available.

What is sadder is when there are options available to these children, parents do not have the courage to give their child the right chinuch s/he needs and deserves. The usual reason is one of "stigma" and "shidduchim" – where parents are afraid for their reputation. Deeper down, it’s terrifying for some to face and admit to what may seem (in their eyes) as failure. One should not rush to mock or belittle these reasons for they stem from genuine fears. However these fears can be abated with the correct hashkofo of the community and encouragement to these parents (our fellow brethren).

I congratulate all the parents who have the courage and insight to do the right thing with their children thereby fulfilling the mitzvah of truly educating their children.
