“Maccabees!” to Debut at the Jewish Children’s Museum

by Shlomo Abraham

The Jewish Children’s Museum announced the debut of its brand new Show, Maccabees! The live Chanukah adventure set to open on November 26 to the public. Maccabees is a fully-immersive interactive experience in which visitors of all ages “tour” ancient Judea and learn about the miracle of Chanukah.

According to Dovid Weinbaum project coordinator of Maccabees, the show uses a vast array of special effects and lots of humor to engage visitors in the gripping narrative. Maccabees explores each pivotal moment of the Chanukah story.

Weinbaum says the aim of Maccabees was to create “an adventure, where participants are not on the outside looking in; they are a part of the story…they truly sense the Syrian-Greek challenge to the Jews and take pride in the Maccabees miraculous victory.”

With under a month remaining until the show opens, the writers and designers of Maccabees are putting the finishing touches on the elaborate sets. Working alongside them are the Museum’s educators who are overseeing each step of the production to ensure the educational and entertainment quality that has come to define a Jewish Children’s Museum production.

Maccabees will entertain and fascinate each visitor in his or her own way. Along their journey, children will meet King Antiochus and hear his evil decrees against Jewish observance. Dressed as Maccabees, they’ll hide from the Greek army in caves, play dreidel, march up and retake the Beit Hamikdash and search for pure olive oil.

Since opening to the public in 2004, the Jewish Children’s Museum has consistently offered visitors exciting shows and interactive productions for each season and every Jewish holiday. A JCM spokesperson says Maccabees! improves on this tradition with its own unique flavor, and appeals to fans of all ages.

The Maccabees adventure will play on the entire fourth floor of the Jewish Children’s Museum. Maccabees will run at the Jewish Children’s Museum from November 20, 2006 through January 8, 2007. For tickets and schedules, call: 718-907-8803 or log on to: www.jcm.museum.
