Chanukah from the eyes of a “Tankist”:
Chanukah is marvelous; it’s that time of year when Chabad is in the news all across the globe. From Fox News to your local paper, any newspaper, news station, radio talk show, everyone is talking about Chabad and Chanukah.
There is one thing however that does not make it into the media, you won’t even find it on the Chabad websites and it happens every day of Chanukah across the Tri-state-area.
As the children finish their studies each afternoon in Crown Heights, hundreds of Yeshiva boys of all ages line President Street, with Menorahs in hand and board Mitzvah Tanks to fight the darkness of exile on the filthy street corners of Manhattan and shopping centers throughout the Tri-state-area.

“Just yesterday” says one of the Mitzvah Tank Drivers, “We, by total Hashgocha Protis [Devine Providence], ended up near Elizabeth, New Jersey. We received lots of praise for coming to a place where Judaism is closing up shop and bringing it into the streets. The people loved it, they came onto the tank, ate latkes, lit the Menorah and watched a Chanukah video.”
This is what goes on all over New York on a nightly basis.
“On the first 2 nights of Chanukah, we’ve already distributed more than 200 Menorah sets” continues the driver. “More than 500 Dreidel’s, doughnuts, latkes, ‘The gift of Chanukah’ DVDs and a variety of brochures.”
“We know we’ll never be in the press, but for the lives that are touched, it is well worth it. We already have 6 commitments to spend a Shabbos in Crown Heights and the connection only grows from there.”
