by CrownHeights.info
A late-night fire tore through a residential building on Kingston Ave on Monday, leaving two people dead and prompting a large emergency response.
According to reports, the blaze broke out shortly before 11:05 p.m. on the third floor of 446 Kingston Avenue, quickly filling the structure with heavy smoke and forcing firefighters into an aggressive interior attack. Crews worked to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent units in the multi-story building.
According to authorities, two residents—believed to be a married couple—were found inside the apartment. An 80-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man were transported to Kings County Hospital Center, where both were pronounced dead. Hatzalah’s assistance was not needed.
Fire officials reported that one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation during the operation and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Initial reports and sources cited in coverage by CrownHeights.info indicate that clutter inside the apartment may have contributed to the rapid spread and intensity of the fire, complicating firefighting efforts and escape conditions.
Some residents of the building were evacuated as a precaution while crews worked to fully extinguish the blaze and ventilate the smoke-filled hallways. The incident caused significant disruption in the area, with emergency vehicles lining Kingston Avenue late into the night.
Fire marshals are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire. At this time, it has not yet been determined whether the blaze was accidental or caused by another factor.
