Early Morning Fire Displaces Tens of Families

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — An early morning fire broke out in the apartment of a Jewish family on Eastern Parkway, forcing the evacuation of the entire building. A number of reported injuries were all non-life threatening.

At approximately 6:50am a fire broke out in the kitchen of an apartment on the sixth floor of 706 Eastern Parkway, which is on the corner of Brooklyn Avenue. The fire department responded with ‘all hands.’

Initial reports said that there were children injured, which prompted a major emergency medical services response, along with Hatzalah who brought in two ambulances.

A total of six people were taken to the hospital, among them three fire fighters from engine 234 and ladder 123 who suffered burn injuries. Others suffered smoke inhalation.

Residents of the building were seen milling around in their nightwear, some without shoes, until neighbors stepped in and helped each other out.

    B“H it wasn’t that bad, only 2 appts. got burned and another few temporarely damadged due to smoke and water.

    You can see exactly who was in the middle of davening… who was in the middle of snoozing…

    There are at least 3 people in the hospital with 2nd degree burns, 1 family is without a home, and yes, the air conditioner is gone. It would be nice for us to get together in support of those who lost so much is such a situation, whether with a place to stay, money, clothing, etc.
