West Indian Day Parade to Return to Eastern Parkway Monday With Heightened Security Measures

The annual West Indian American Day Parade will once again take over Eastern Parkway this Labor Day, with hundreds of thousands of revelers expected to descend on Crown Heights for the city’s largest Caribbean cultural celebration.

The 59th annual New York Carnival Parade is scheduled for Monday, September 7, with the festivities expected to run from approximately 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The parade will travel along Eastern Parkway from the Utica Avenue area toward Grand Army Plaza, bringing elaborate costumes, music, dancing and Caribbean food vendors to the neighborhood.

This year’s celebration will take place under an extensive security operation following violence associated with the parade in previous years.

In 2025, five people were shot and two others were slashed during the Labor Day festivities, according to police.

The NYPD is expected to deploy specialized units, drones, barricades and additional personnel throughout the area. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch are scheduled to brief the public on the security operation ahead of Monday’s festivities.

Security measures are expected to be particularly noticeable along Eastern Parkway, with attendees urged to expect checkpoints and restrictions when entering the parade area.

The heightened security comes as city officials seek to balance the enormous popularity of the event with the need to keep participants and residents safe.

For residents of Crown Heights, the parade will mean significant street closures and traffic restrictions throughout Monday.

Eastern Parkway will serve as the centerpiece of the celebration, with crowds expected to stretch for blocks along the route. The event traditionally attracts more than one million participants and spectators, making it one of New York City’s largest annual outdoor celebrations.

Residents should expect significant disruptions to vehicle traffic and should plan ahead if traveling through the neighborhood.

Public transportation is expected to be the easiest way to access the area, although subway service and entrances in the immediate vicinity of the parade may also be affected.
