CB 9 Releases Bike Lanes and Street Parking Survey For Community Input
by CrownHeights.info
Crown Heights’s Community Board 9 has released its own bike-lane/parking spot removal survey, looking to hear back directly from community members on the DOT’s proposals.
This survey, which is separate from any others you may have taken, will be used at the next General Board Meeting, Dec 16, 2024, where they will vote on the Bike Lanes and Parking Spot Removal.
A previous survey from Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, which included more than 900 people, came out with a nearly 90% opposition to the DOT proposal. Rabbi Behrman’s survey will not be counted as part of the Community Board 9’s new survey.
At the most recent Executive Committee Meeting this past November, Community Board 9’s Transportation Chair Ethan Norville described the previous Bike Lane and Parking Survey as basically being 50/50, with just 55 responses.

The cyclist community has posted the Bike Lane / Daylighting Survey to their friends on Reddit, with 77 thumbs up responses. However, the December 1, 2024 deadline has been extended indefinitely, for now, by the CB 9 Transportation Chair, and has been confirmed by separate email to me.

IF the CB 9 Bike Lane / Daylighting proposal, which is being circulated on Reddit by the Cyclist community, comes out overwhelmingly for Bike Lanes – my concern is that the NYC DOT will feel emboldened to go with their original proposal below, (Kingston from Winthrop to Eastern Pkwy).

As a bike commuter, I actually hate these “protected”bike lanes. They put me at odds with pedestrians and leave me trapped when cars turn across the bike lane

If NYC DOT extends the southerly bike lane on Brooklyn Av coming down from Bed Stuy, there has to be a northerly counterpart, otherwise, all of Kingston will be an “unmarked” bike lane heading back north. NY Ave which is close to the Nostrand subway is best bet. On NY Ave, remove parking on NY Ave, or change diagonal parking to parallel parking, North of Empire.

Turning lanes actually makes sense to increase throughput capacity on Brooklyn Ave. Intersections are a major choke point. The turning lanes also increase visibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists

As long as the bicycle paycholists don’t follow traffic signals people are going to be injured more. The right turn blind spot with parallel bikers to the right and left turn blind spot for parallel bikers to the left remain dangerous for cars. Hashem gave people without cars bus lanes for a reason. Sepeate lanes for rollerskating ? How bout dog lanes for dog run? Test out delay times first
