Self-Defense Crown Heights Program Offers Separate Men’s & Women’s Classes

After a series of antisemitic attacks in New York City in the summer of 2019, Guardian Self Defense (GSD) was born. Tired of seeing attack after attack with no response or action, founder Joe Richards – Senior Director at AIPAC and overall mensch – brought together a group of like-minded community members, including some Crown Heights Shomrim members, to organize weekly Krav Maga-based self-defense sessions in the heart of Crown Heights.

The goal? To connect everyday people with self-defense experts to strengthen the community.

“GSD teaches students, ranging from beginners to the more seasoned, how to become their own first responders. Krav Maga is the simplest and most effective method of self-defense and violence prevention, as it sharpens built-in instincts to react quickly to danger,” says Joe.

Krav Maga, which translates to “Contact Combat”, is all-encompassing: it teaches students basic self defense skills, situational awareness, confidence, and fitness! GSD’s instructors hail from Traditional Krav Maga in Great Neck, forming a team of highly skilled practitioners devoted to the cause. For more than three years, GSD has trained over 200 men and women and has recently expanded to two additional locations.

So what are the students saying?

“There is nothing like this. Real-life scenarios that make me feel confident to protect my family,” says Aron D. Sara S., who joined the women’s program this year, says “After a few weeks, I felt so empowered. I can’t believe the difference in such a short time.”

With each cycle, more students share how the nonprofit’s lessons and welcoming community impact their lives. A survey following the second cycle indicated that 98% of students felt more confident to protect themselves because of their training with GSD. Additionally, 91% of students felt that they were more inclined to help protect Jews against anti-semitism if they were to witness an attack. What’s key to note: GSD is not a gym. It’s a nonprofit organization dedicated to help the community and keep us well prepared.

How can you join the movement?

GSD offers separate classes for men and women over three-month cycles. Training is held every Sunday evening at Crunch Crown Heights.

The next cycle will take place starting Jan 21st through April 14th. Come as you are. No previous experience or specific level of fitness necessary. Be prepared for your life to change!
