A Mes Mitzvah From Discovery to Burial

Did You Know Mr. Mendel Sholomson?

On Erev Yomtov the phone rang at Chesed Shel Emes, it was a NYC Medical Examiner trying to decide what to do with a Niftar that had been found in a local park. Without much more than his name, all the Medical Examiner knew was that he was Jewish, he was a previous resident of Crown Heights, and that his father had passed away in 2018 and had been buried by Chesed Shel Emes.

The case was passed on to Chesed Shel Emes of Crown Height run by Mordy Hecht, and Mordy reached out through Social Media to the community.

The message was published on Chesed Shel Emes’s social Media and CrownHeights.info, where is was seen by thousands and a family member tracked down.

Finally armed with information on the Niftar, Chesed Shel Emes began the process of giving a fitting Jewish burial to Mr. Mendel Sholomson. At 9:30am Wednesday morning, on Kingston Ave alongside the JCM, a small Levaya took place, bidding farewell as Mendel was taken to the Chesed Shel Emes Cemetery in Woodridge, NY where he will be interred.
