NYC Contemplating Making Grand Army Plaza A Car-Free Zone

If you think commuting around Brooklyn is a pain now, remember that the city can always make it worse.

In a shocking report published by Gothamist.com, revelations are made that the NYC Department of Transportation is actively contemplating making Grand Army Plaza a car-free zone and connecting it with the “Open Streets” program already in use on Vanderbilt and Underhill Avenues.

A vital traffic hub, Grand Army plaza connects downtown Brooklyn with the entire central and southern sections of Brooklyn, making the idea of a car free GAP (Grand Army Plaza) a logistical nightmare.

“We want to take it to the next level and not just have it be reliant on people moving barriers at certain times of day, but having these turn into more consistent and better designed public spaces,” the Gothamist quoted the DOT Deputy Commissioner as saying. “I would say at the moment we’re not taking anything off of the table.”

Changing Grand Army Plaza into a pedestrian only area would also have some other far reaching consequences, including placing Methodist Hospital, a well frequented hospital from the Crown Heights Jewish community, suddenly slightly out of reach.

Of course it’s possible. You’ll walk or take the bus or the subway (and be exposed to criminals who might decide to throw you on the tracks), peasant. Because Your Betters have spoken.

(Now, to be sure, we could vote out those “betters.” But you see how well that works out…)
