$3 Million In Grants Received By The Crown Heights Jewish Community Council On Behalf of The Crown Heights Jewish Community In Just One Year

by CrownHeights.info

A great indicator of how powerful a community’s voting block is can be discovered by looking at how much money that community gets back in government grants. Looking at public filings for the CHJJC it looks like it is powerful indeed.

In public tax and audit filings by the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, which receives grant money from the government on behalf of the Crown Heights Jewish community, you can find the annual year-over-year grant numbers are staggering.

Since 2014, the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council has received over $18,500,000 in grants from US, State, and local governments. In the 2020 tax year alone, ending in June of 2021, the Community Council received $2,936,026 in contributions and grants for use in Crown Heights.

For a community the size of Crown Heights, that number is staggering.

The grants, many of them state and federal multi-year and targeted grants, include a mammoth Weatherization grant from the federal government much of which goes to Crown Heights landlords to “weatherize” their buildings. Since 2009, the CHJCC has received over $20,000,000 in weatherization grants.

According to the grant’s website, “The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provides funding to states, U.S. overseas territories, and Indian tribal governments, which manage the administration of the program. These governments, in turn, fund a network of local community action agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local governments that provide these weatherization services in every state, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and among Native American tribes.”

Other grants provided by the state and federal governments include money for community initiatives ($68,000 since 2013), addiction ($1,728,458 since 2009), and victims of crimes grants ($1,960,149.22 since 2014).

On a local level, the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council is also well taken care of, with annual grants from NYC numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

In 2020, a total of $377,500 in grants was provided to the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council by the New York City Council and other elected officials for local initiatives and community services. 2021 saw $383,100 granted by the city, 2022 grew to $397,236.

Disclaimer: CrownHeights.info is merely reporting the amounts of money granted to the CHJCC, and is not reporting on the money’s use or endorsing those presently controlling the organization. The present CHJCC administration was elected to their two-year term over eight years ago, and has since failed to hold further elections despite their promise to do so three years ago.

In the previous election which took place for local public office, Crown Heights residents poured out a whopping 4,000 votes, which captured the attention of public officials and propelled the community’s chosen candidates into office

Since then, Crown Heights has become a regular stop for politicians and has been given an extra ear to local and community issues.

With the upcoming election for governor a close run between Republican Lee Zeldin (endorsed by Crown Heights United and 40 community leaders), and incumbent New York State Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul (endorsed by Chanina Sperlin and Devorah Halberstam), the Crown Heights Jewish community may again hold a disproportionate sway over the election outcome.

Election day is November 8th, and the election turnout will directly effect the amount of money that the community will receive in grants.

    To CHinfo,

Can the CHJCC give us an accounting for where this money went to?
From what i read here, its all going to the wealthy landlords who
    own the budlings?
What does the CHJCC do for the regular folk?

Those that need the grants – don’t get them. The article makes clear thst the bulk of the grants ends up fattening the few wealthy landlords.

People come pleading at the CHJCC for assistance with grants such as HEAP and get turned away (some in our community end up getting help in Williansberg or BoroPark).

Shame on us for allowing this sorry state of affairs. THIS IS A SHANDA!!

  • Camp?

This past summer was the first summer in quite a few years that the council had funds to send kids to camp…and it wasn’t much…there were years when they gave a lot of money for camp…where is the money going??

  • Thank u

The article’s disclaimer, unusually not at the beginning (That is, you have to dig for it) says a lot:
Disclaimer: CrownHeights.info is merely reporting the amounts of money granted to the CHJCC, and is not reporting on the money’s use or endorsing those presently controlling the organization. . . .

But the timing is impeccable! I am glad to see so many comments seeing through this pandering news

    PS:
I am glad crownheights.info saw fit to point out that the elected CHJCC councilmembers two-year term ended over 8 years ago — and that the CHJCC has since failed to hold further elections despite their promise to do so THREE YEARS AGO (why not EIGHT?!).

THAT is important news we need to know! It means that anyone this suspicious bunch endorses is not necessarily someone to vote for.
